Early life
Robert Christian Boes Hansen was born in Estherville, Iowa, on February 15, 1939, the elder of two children to a Danish mother and a Danish father. In 1942, the family moved to California but in 1949, they settled in Pocahontas. Edna Margret Petersen's mother was pregnant. Christian Hansen (1907-1983), his father, operated a bakery in the town, and Robert was employed at the bakery. He was painfully shy as a child and had a terrible stutter and severe acne that left him permanently scarred. Hansen grew up hating the pretty girls in school and nursing fantasies of cruel revenge.
Hansen was portrayed as a quiet and selfish boy throughout childhood and adolescence, and he had a difficult friendship with his domineering father. He began to practice both hunting and archery, and in those pastimes, he often found refuge in these pastimes. Hansen enlisted in the United States Army Reserve in 1957 and served for a year before being dismissed. He later worked as an assistant drill instructor at a police academy in Pocahontas, Iowa. He started a relationship with a younger woman there. In the summer of 1960, he married her.
