Robert Garioch Life

Robert Garioch Sutherland (9 May 1909 – April 1981), a Scottish poet and translator, was born in 1909 – 26 April 1981.

His poetry was almost entirely in Scots, and he was a key figure in the literary revival of the language in the mid-20th century.

Robert Fermson, an 18th-century poet, and Italian dialect sonneteer Giuseppe Gioachino Belli were among his influences.

Life

Garioch was born in Edinburgh, son of a decorator and a music teacher, and attended the Royal High School before heading to Edinburgh University. In 1941, he was ordered into the Royal Corps of Signals and married early the following year. Garioch was captured by German troops in November 1942 and spent the next three years as a Prisoner of War while serving in Operation Torch in North Africa.

After Garioch returned to the United Kingdom in 1945, he became a tutor, a job he held until his early retirement in 1964. He worked on a number of Scottish literary journals, most notably Scottish International. In the 1970s, he spent a number of years as writer-in-residence at the University of Edinburgh.
