Like Tiger Woods' Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, this week's field is cut to the low 50 and ties and other players within ten strokes of the lead after the first two rounds. Fowler shot 76-82 this week, which places him outside the cut line. The line was expected to fall at either 4- or 5- over par at the end of his second round.

MATTHEWS AT TPC SAWGRASS: The gold statue glinted beside the first tee and, a few yards away, the Golden Bear tried to conceal from view. Jack Nicklaus's arrival didn't take long, but the hordes who had descended on the hordes were unimpressed when they arrived at 1.40 p.m. on Thursday, weren't deterred. When this'surprise' was announced, they erupted and applauded. Nicklaus, who is now 84, but the only three-time winner of The Players, shuffled around the corner and on to the tee box to welcome three other former champions. Rickie Fowler (2015) was the first to perform. Then Justin Thomas (2021), who was met with a cheeky question: 'What's your name?' Scottie Scheffler, the man everyone was eager to see at Sawgrass, was then, finally.
At 17, an English major winner, a young-faced golf cult hero, and two others, who all made the big money, but do you know these celebrities from their youth and present?

Golfers must commit to the game from an early age, forgoing childhood pleasures in the search of a dream to make it to the top. That deal, unfortunately, is unfulfilled for the most part. Only a select few make it to the elite level of the game, whether due to injury, appearance, or simply bad luck. That's why it's so rare to see some of the early images of the stars of today's day, who have managed to defyse and, in even rarer cases, win the major awards of the sport.

On Wednesday, Poulter wrote, 'Being two faces is a terrible characteristic.' I'd be embarrassed if I had to change my story now and come out and try and look smart.'

Team Europe's bizarre Ryder Cup kissing group photo leaves fans questioning 'amusing uniforms' worn by WAGs (but were they poking fun at the US for doing the same in 2016?)

Team Europe celebrated their Ryder Cup victory yesterday by capturing the sweet moment their excited wives and girlfriends kissed their golfing buddies in the sweetest way. However, fans were left confused and perplexed by the matching 'uniforms' the glamorous WAGs posed in the slightly uncomfortable group picture, which also included singleton Viktor Hovland (circled, central), 26, stole the spotlight. Since winning the gold medal against Team USA in Rome, the other halves opted for white ensembles with bright yellow jackets. Meanwhile, grinning Norwegian golfer Viktor was left holding his arm around vice-captain Jose Maria Olazabal's chest. The set-up was, perhaps intentionally reminiscent of Team USA's 2016 group photo (inset), which caused a lot of commotion online after golfer Rickie Fowler was seen walking alone amid kissing couples in matching outfits.

With England's Tommy Fleetwood sealing the deal in a nerve-jangling climax on Sunday, Europe resisted a tense American fightback to regain the Ryder Cup. The Americans, who were trying to make the most comeback in the biennial event ever, found their mojo after being outplayed and outfought for two days at Marco Simone. Hauling back a five-point deficit, but Fleetwood made sure the trophy returned to Europe when his opponent Rickie Fowler conceded the 16th hole, leaving the Britons up with two to play and a promised half. Fleetwood won by 3&1 on a 3&1 win, but the celebrations had already started as Europe boosted their 30-year home record against the Americans and shattered the record 19-9 thrashing they endured at Whistling Straits in 2021. MIKE DICKSON of Mail Sport was in Rome to evaluate the participants.
