Richard E. Hawley Career

Hawley graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science in 1964. He served as commander of United States Air Forces in Europe and Allied Air Forces Central Europe with headquarters at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. He also commanded an Air Force group, a wing and United States Forces Japan and Fifth Air Force, with headquarters at Yokota Air Base, Japan. He served as a forward air controller at Pleiku Air Base, South Vietnam, where he flew 433 combat missions. He retired on July 1, 1999.

Hawley is a graduate of Georgetown University (Master of Arts, 1965), Armed Forces Staff College (1974), and Naval War College (1982). He is a recipient of the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with two silver and two bronze oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
