Richard Dawkins Life

Richard Dawkins, (born 26 March 1941) is an English ethologist, evolutionary biologist, and author.

He is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford, and he served as the University of Oxford's Professor of Public Understanding of Science from 1995 to 2008. Dawkins' book The Selfish Gene, a 1976 book that popularized the gene-centred view of evolution and coined memes, came to prominence.

He introduced the influential theory that the phenotypic effects of a gene are not restricted to an organism's body but can also extend into the environment.

In 2006, Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science was established. Dawkins is known as a vocal atheist.

He is best known for his critique of creationism and intelligent design.

He argues against the watchmaker analogy in The Blind Watchmaker (1986), a defense of a supernatural creator based on the diversity of living organisms.

Rather, he compares evolutionary processes to a blind watchmaker, in the sense that reproduction, mutation, and selection are unguided by a designer.

Dawkins' book The God Delusion (2006) argues that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that religious belief is a delusion. Dawkins has received numerous prestigious academic and writing awards, as well as appearing on television, radio, and Internet, mainly speaking about his books, his atheism, and his views and opinions as a public intellectual.

Personal life

Dawkins has been married three times and has a daughter. Dawkins married ethologist Marian Stamp in Annestown, Ireland, on August 19th; they divorced in 1984. He married Eve Barham (1951–1999) in Oxford on June 1, 1984. Juliet Emma Dawkins (born 1984, Oxford) was their daughter. Dawkins and Barham divorced. In 1992, he married actress Lalla Ward in Kensington and Chelsea, London. Dawkins met her through a mutual friend, Douglas Adams, who had worked with her on BBC's Doctor Who. Dawkins and Ward separated in 2016 and reportedly referred to the split as "completely amicable." He describes himself as a "cultural Anglican" and a "secular Christian" and a "cultural Anglican."

While at home, the Dawkins suffered a minor haemorrhagic stroke on February 6, 2016. Dawkins announced later that year that he had almost recovered.

In the American thriller film Intersect, Dawkins was featured as the voice of Q42/Computer.

Eminent scientist Richard Dawkins reveals fascinating theory behind West's mental health crisis

'Many people do worry that the pace of change is such that we are no longer well-adapted to live in it,' iconoclastic evolutionary scientist Dawkins told podcast listeners Sunday. 'This is a worry.' Rising cases of mental illness in developed countries might be attributable to their 'astonishing rate' of technological change, according to Dawkins

Labour blasted for scrapping University freedom of speech law: More than 500 academics join forces to call on Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson to rethink her decision

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 24, 2024
In an open letter to Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, the experts - including evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and historian Niall Ferguson - urge her to implement the outstanding provisions of the Higher Education Freedom of Speech Act (HEFOSA), which were meant to come into force at the start of August. The letter states: 'The decision to halt HEFOSA appears to reflect the view , widespread among opponents of the Act, that there is no 'free speech problem' in UK universities. 'Nothing could be more false. Hundreds of academics and students have been hounded, censured, silenced or even sacked over the last 20 years for the expression of legal opinions.' However their warnings have been dismissed out of hand by the Government. A source told The Times, which first reported the letter: 'We make no apology for pausing the Tories ' hate-speech charter, which would have allowed anti-semites and Holocaust deniers free rein on campuses.
