Personal life
Clementi served with the Navy Seabees for eight years and was sent as a reservist after 9/11. In his hometown of Slidell, Louisiana, he also runs "Rich Clementi's Gladiator Gym." Clementi is divorced from his first wife and has two sons and a daughter with his second wife, Mandi.
Mixed martial arts career
Clementi began his professional career in 1999 and amassed a 13–6 record before making his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut at UFC 41, where he lost by submission to Yves Edwards. Clementi continued to compete in smaller promotions before being selected as a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 4 reality show, which focused on promising fighters who had not achieved in their UFC careers. Despite the fact that the names of "Team No Love" has changed, Clementi's preliminary bout against Shonie Carter was decided by unanimous vote. He appeared on the undercard of the season finale as a lightweight but he was unable to score back naked choke to Din Thomas.
Despite his setbacks, Clementi continued to participate in the UFC. At UFC Fight Night 8, he defeated Ross Pointon by rear naked choke submission, but the match was not broadcast during the show. Clementi alternated between appearing in the UFC and smaller promotions after losing to Roan Carneiro at UFC Fight Night 9. On two weeks' notice, Anthony Johnson was battling him at UFC 76 and triumphed by back naked choke submission. Clementi's win lifted his official UFC record to 2–3.
Clementi won 79 against Melvin Guillard, the previous champion. Guillard was tapped from a rear naked choke. Clegg and Guillard were engaged in a war of words ahead of the match.
Clementi won two more matches against Sam Stout and Terry Etim at UFC 83 and UFC 84 respectively in a month. By this point, Clementi was riding a four-win streak in the UFC and a six-win streak in his career. The streak came to an end at UFC 90, where he lost by unanimous decision to Gray Maynard. Clementi was in the main event of the first MMA fight in Pennsylvania on June 27, 2009. In Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena, the promotion firm UCFC held its "Rumble on the Rivers" function. Clementi was signed by Bellator and made his Bellator 28 debut against Carey Vanier in a Bellator Lightweight tournament Qualifying contest, but he lost by split decision.
