Reuben Kamanga Life

Reuben Chitandika Kamanga (26 August 1929 – 20 September 1996) was a Zambian freedom fighter, politician, and statesman.

He was educated at Munali Secondary School.

Early and family Life

In the Chipata district of Eastern Zambia's Chitandika village of chief Chinunda, Kamanga was born on 2 August in 1929.

Political career

During the independence struggle, particularly during the 1959-60 period, Kamanga was arrested many times. Kamanga and other senior males from the Eastern Province of 1958 joined the United National Independence Party (UNIP). From 1960 to 1962, he lived in Cairo. He served as both the deputy president of Zambia and Minister of Labour and Mines before independence.

Kamanga was elected and became Zambia's first Vice President after independence was established on October 24th, 1964. Kamanga served for three years as the country's first Vice President before Kenneth Kaunda redirected him to serve in a new cabinet position. He was first appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1967 and then Minister of Rural Development in 1969. He spent time in the Ministry of Agriculture as well. Kamanga was elected to the Central Committee in 1983 as a Rural Development Minister. Before his resignation in 1990, RCK served as Chairman of the Central Committee in charge of Legal & Political Affairs.
