Career
Harlin began his career in filmmaking in the 1980s, directing commercials and company films for companies such as Shell. Later, he worked as a buyer for a Finnish film distributor and met fellow Finn Markus Selin in Los Angeles in 1982. They became friends and started writing "Arctic Heat," which later became Born American, with Mike Norris as the lead actor. Born American became the most expensive Finnish film ever, and in 1986, they received financing from the US, and the most expensive Finnish film ever was born. It opened in over 1,000 theaters in the United States. He formed his own production company with partner Markus Selin, Larmark Productions, on July 9, 1986, the first two projects were low-budget, and it was a Los Angeles-based production firm.
Harlin went to Los Angeles and Irwin Yablans, who gave him a script of Prison to film. The film was made with a low budget and only came in 42 copies. After meeting producer Robert Shaye, who at first did not want Harlin to direct the film, he went from New Line Cinema to direct A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 (1988). It was the first-grossing film in the series until the 2003 debut of Freddy vs. Jason, and its funding was seven times higher than the original A Nightmare on Elm Street.
After the success of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, Harlin, was supposed to direct Alien 3's science-fiction thriller Alien 3. He had been contributing to the project for less than a year, but he had to leave due to cultural differences with the designers.
The comedy The Adventures of Ford Fairlane and the action thriller Die Hard 2 were shot and released a week apart in 1990. The former failed, but the latter was a commercial success. Harlin's debut as a director of Rambling Rose through his own Midnight Sun Pictures for director Martha Coolidge received critical acclaim the following year. At the 1992 Academy Awards, the film received Best Feature at the 1992 Independent Spirit Awards, as well as Best Actor Laura Dern.
Harlin, Markus Selin, and a few other businessmen founded Planet FunFun in Kerava, Finland, in 1992, the latter of which Harlin later expanded his theme park to a cinema park, but the former was also used by loaning his film sets and props to special themed rooms. Sports tournaments were also held at the park, as well as a filmed television series. However, Planet FunFun was short-lived, closing in 1995.
Cliffhanger, Harlin's first film with Sylvester Stallone, was 1993's action thriller Cliffhanger. Harlin's career suffered as a result of the 1995 pirate adventure film Cutthroat Island, which starred Harlin's then-wife, Geena Davis. Cutthroat Island was one of the largest box-office bombs of all time, losing $147 million and leading to Carolco Pictures' bankruptcy. Harlin continued to have moderate success with Long Kiss Goodnight, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Davis in 1996, and the science fiction horror film Deep Blue Sea in 1999.
Harlin intended to produce a film based on Formula One, but after being unable to secure the rights, he instead produced Driven, a 2001 film based on the American Champ Car series.
When the original filmmaker Peter Howitt died out, Harlin took over directing the action mystery film Mindhunters, but studio delays delayed the release. After the studio was dissatisfied with director Paul Schrader's version cut, Harlin continued to film a more realistic horror adaptation of Exorcist: The Beginning (2004), the studio was still mourning for the film's more traumatic drama. In 2005, Mindhunters were first introduced in the United States.
The WWE Studios action film 12 Rounds, starring John Cena, was directed by Harlin. It was first announced in March 2009. In 2009, Harlin directed an independent war film in Georgia. In the area of South Ossetia, the film, 5 Days of War, was a tale about the 2008 war between Georgia and Russia. The film starred true-life celebrities, including Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, whose role was played by Andy Garca.

One of two Hercules films released in 2014, the other being Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson, was critically panned and was a box-office bomb.
Harlin produced Skiptrace, a 2016 action comedy film that starred Jackie Chan, Johnny Knoxville, and Fan Bingbing. Legend of the Ancient Sword, a Chinese role-playing video game, was then directed by Aaron Coveney for Alibaba Pictures. The film was a box-office bomb, grossing only $1.25 million out of a budget of $11 million. His film The Misfits has received national and international recognition.
He was named as a jury member at the 11th Beijing International Film Festival for Tiantan Awards in 2021.
Harlin began producing the action-comedy Nosebleed at New Line Cinema, starring Jackie Chan as a window washer who foils a terrorist plot to destroy the World Trade Center in 1999. Since moving studios to MGM in May 2001, the film was postponed. Following the September 11 attacks, the plot was largely rewritten before being completely scrapped. Chan later informed Oriental Daily News that the film was supposed to begin filming at the North Tower less than two hours before it was struck by American Airlines Flight 11, but that he only survived the attack because he returned to Toronto to film The Tuxedo instead. Chan's argument has been dismissed as improbable because of the change in studios and because he was hired to produce The Tuxedo in Toronto months before the attacks.
Harlin's next project was supposed to be a film adaptation of Ray Bradbury's short story A Sound of Thunder, but Harlin pulled the project off due to a disagreement with Bradbury. Despite the fact that the producer was changed, Harlin was still listed as a producer when the finished film was released in 2005.
Harlin and Markus Selinin collaborated in 2006 to produce a biopic of Finnish President and Marshal of Finland Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, but budget constraints put the project on hold. Rather, Harlin turned The Covenant, which was yet another modest commercial success, into low-budget terror. The Mannerheim film project was revived for a short time in 2007, and Harlin returned to Finland. Heikki Vihinen and Marko Leino wrote the screenplay, and it was supposed to be the biggest film project in Finnish history. With Mikko Nousiainen playing Mannerheim, the film was released in Helsinki on January 15, 2010. However, 30% of the funds were cut by one of the financiers as a result of the Great Recession, and the postponement of shooting the winter scenes in 2009 looms. In 2010, pre-production began in 2010, and Dome Karukoski was given the project in August 2011.
