Life

Effendi was born in Baku on April 26, 1977. She obtained her diploma from the Azerbaijan State Institute of Languages.

Effendi started photographing in 2001 and became a full-time photographer in 2005 after quitting her career as an Economic Development Specialist at the United States Agency for International Development in Baku. Pipe Dreams, Effendi's first monograph, published by Mets & Schilt, explores how the oil industry affected everyday lives of ordinary people in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey along the Baku–Ceyhan pipeline. She began working with BP, the oil consortium that owns the pipeline from Azerbaijan via Georgia to Ceyhan's southern Turkish port. She discovered that only a small percentage of the urban population of her country is benefiting from the oil boom while photographing this promotional material. Pipe Dreams was transformed into Pipe Dreams over the course of six years of study.

Since the 1986 nuclear war in Istanbul, transgender people in Istanbul, village life in Khinalug, the Russia-Georgia war of 2008, life of youth in Tehran, Russia, Cairo, and Afghanistan, Effendi has also written stories in Chernobyl. Chernobyl: Still Life in the Zone, she began a new series in 2010. Rather than a memento, she wanted to highlight people's lives in the region.
