QUENTIN LETTES: Any communion wafer would be milled to a snare. A whistleblower vicar would make Justin Welby clench his fists so hard

A blonde would make a bishop kick a hole in a stained-glass window,' Raymond Chandler said of him. Any communion wafer would be milled to a dust if we had a whistleblower vicar to make Justin Welby clench his fists so hard. Matthew Firth, the Rev., was on the home affairs committee. He recalled Iranians and Syrians arriving in 'batches' at his former church in Darlington, Co Durham, seeking conversion. They were taken by a chap who later described them as a 'fixer.' They had only been refused asylum before. If you're contesting a Home Office asylum refusal and can say you've just converted to Christianity, it helps.

'Not many people can boast that they've clambered over the Hollywood sign,' writes Thomas W. Hodgkinson, who does exactly that on his way to Los Angeles. The historic is off limits to the general public, but Thomas was given special admission as part of the Centennial Celebrations. Read more about his stay in Tinseltown.
Raymond Chandler's first book, The Big Sleep, which was released in 1939, has been slapped by publishers for using 'outdated words.'

The Big Sleep is considered to be Chandler's first work of crime fiction, and it is the first of Chandler's books to introduce the private detective Philip Marlowe. Vintage, a publishing house owned by Penguin Random House, has released a note on the book pointing to the book's "outdated words and cultural representations." Chandler's book is described by the publisher as a tale about a "dead millionaire" who recruits private eye Philip Marlowe to deal with the blackmailer of one of his two troublesome daughters.' Marlowe has been charged with abduction, pornography, seduction, and murder as a result. 'These books are exceptional works in the genre, but they are also firmly of the time and place in which they were written.' These books may have outdated cultural representations and words.'
TOM UTLEY: Our family lived in a pokey flat with no carpets so I could go to school

TOM UTLEY: There were times when I wondered why I went on crippling the Utley budget for the sake of offering our two oldest boys a private education. Colleagues who earned roughly the same as mine did, but those who decided to send their children to state schools had much more comfortable lives. The bulk of them lived in posh neighborhoods, drove swankier cars, and swanned off on much more glamorous holidays than those we spent sponging off kind friends in Ireland or Normandy. And worse, the Left-wingers of them assumed an insufferable sense of moral majour as if their decision to save themselves a king's ransom in school tuition was more frustrating. They didn't want to give their children unfair advantages, they'd say, before asking us if we'd like to see the photographs of their family's latest memorable skiing holiday in Gstaad.

Nigel Tisdall, the Ingleside Inn, a hotel that gives a sense of "genuine old Hollywood glamour," as his base, learns about Palm Springs' celebrity history and dances in an aviation-themed bar. It's all about lakes, palms, and golf courses bordered by forested peaks with snow in winter,' he says of the resort city.
CHRISTOPHER STEVENS: Clive Myrie, from war reporter to quiz host, is a true Mastermind

CHRISTOPHER STEVENS: Live Myrie must have more hats than Harrods' millinery staff. The 58-year-old journalist has been an ever-present on the BBC this year, most notably reporting from Kyiv at the start of the war in Ukraine. This week, he's been to the fore as a newsreader, retaining a difficult balance in the wake of the Queen's suicide, while still being sombre without seeming mawkish or melodramatic. He's the host as Mastermind in a completely different role (BBC2): The inquisitor with a twinkle appears in an inquisitor with a twinkle.
