Rae Theotis Carruth (born Rae Lamar Wiggins; January 20, 1974) is an American citizen and former football wide receiver.
Carruth was drafted by the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL) in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft (NFL) and spent three seasons with the team after playing college football in Colorado. He was found guilty of plotting to murder Cherica Adams, a young boy who was pregnant with his child in 2001.
He completed an 18-year sentence in the North Carolina state prison system and was released from the Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton, North Carolina, on October 22, 2018.
Early life
Carruth was born and raised in Sacramento, California, and attended Valley High School. He was recruited to the University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado, on a football scholarship.
Personal life
Michelle Wright, Carruth's sister, welcomed their son Raelondo during his sophomore year at Colorado. Wright sued him for child neglect, and Wright later testified that Carruth decided to pay $2,700 in child assistance, half of what he was ordered to pay by a judge, and she had agreed to pay on condition that she be a good father.
Cherica Adams, a real estate agent he had been casually dating, was fired four times by Van Brett Watkins Sr., a nightclub owner and an associate of Carruth, on November 16, 1999. Adams was able to dial 911, saying that Carruth had parked his car in front of her house, and that another vehicle pulled alongside, where its passenger fired her. Carruth then escorted away from the scene.
At the time, Adams was eight months pregnant with Carruth's child. She fell into a coma straight after admission to the hospital. The baby was delivered by doctors in a medical emergency caesarean section. Carruth went to the police and posted a $3 million bond, on the condition that if either Adams or the baby died, he would turn himself in. Adams died on December 14, 1999, the first year he lived. The baby, named Chancellor Lee Adams, survived but suffered with permanent brain damage and cerebral palsy as a result of being without oxygen for 70 minutes before he was born. Chancellor Lee graduated from Vance High School in 2021 at the age of 21.
Carruth escaped after Adams' death, but was captured in West Tennessee on December 15 after being discovered in the trunk of a car outside a motel in Parkers Crossroads. The trunk also contained $3,900 cash, bottles of his urine, extra clothing, candy bars, and a cellphone. On December 16, the Panthers waived him citing a morals clause in his deal, and the NFL suspended him indefinitely on December 17.
Prosecutors argued that Carruth recruited Watkins and others to murder Adams as a result of their refusal to abortion their unborn child, which was denied at the trial. Carruth's counsel, David Rudolf, said the Carruth was involved in a drug deal that had gone bad. They said they fired Adams in a flash after Carruth refused to fund the drug deal, and he had just blown her off after she tried to inform her about Carruth's whereabouts on the night.
Carruth was found guilty of murder conspiracy, shooting into an unoccupied car, and using an instrument to murder an unborn child. He was not guilty of first-degree murder, but he was not suspended from the death penalty. He was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in jail.
For the murder of Cherica Adams, Van Brett Watkins, Sr., was sentenced to jail for a minimum of 40 years, 8 months, and a maximum of 50 years, 8 months.
Carruth wrote a letter in 2018 apologizing to Saundra Adams, the mother of Cherica Adams, who died in interviews for years.
Carruth was released on October 22, 2018, after 18 years in office.
