Career
At a sports prize-distribution ceremony in 1977, Usha was first noticed by O. M. Nambiar, an athletics coach, at a sports prize-distribution function. "What impressed me at first sight about Usha was her lean shape and quick walking style," he told Rediff.com in 2000. I knew she'd be a good sprinter." He began instructing her in the same year. Fast results followed her triumph at the inter-state meet for juniors in Kollam in 1978, where she captured four gold medals in 100 m, 60 m hurdles, and high jump, as well as silver in the 4 x 100 m relay. She received 14 medals at the year's Kerala State college meet. She went on to win multiple medals at the 1979 National Games and 1980 National inter-state meet, as well as several meet records.
Usha clocked 11.8 seconds in the 100 meters and 24.6 seconds in the 200m and 24.6 seconds at a senior inter-state meet in Bangalore in 1981, tying national records in both. She won silver medals in 100 m and 200 m at the 1983 Asian Championships in Jamshedpur, clocking 11.95 s and 25.32 s, a new national record in 400 m.
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Usha's best moment came at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She came off a string of strong shows at the New Delhi inter-state meet and the Mumbai Open National Championships earlier this year. Despite her poor results in the 100 meters and 200 meters at the Moscow World Championships, she decided to concentrate on the 400 m hurdles. She defeated Asian Champion M. D. Valsamma to qualify for the Games at the Olympics trials in Delhi. She clocked 55.7 seconds over American top sprinter Judi Brown in another pre-Olympics trial. In the heats and 55.54 s in the semi-finals, she clocked 56.81 s, setting a new Commonwealth record as she advanced to the final. At the final, she came in fourth, 54.2 seconds behind the eventual bronze medalist by a 1/100th of a second. This came after one of her opponents got off the blocks a bit slower at the start, with one of her competitors described as "broken her rhythm."
Usha took six gold and one bronze in the 1985 Jakarta Asian Championships. She took the 100 meter in 11.64, 200 meters in 52.55, an Asian record, and 400 meters in 56.64, with the final two coming in a span of 35 minutes. In 4 x 400 m relay, she won gold, followed by a final bronze in 4 x 100 meters, a new record in the process for the most gold medals won at a single event in the history of the championships. She tied for the first two of her victories equal to that of Chi Cheng of Taiwan. A week later in the 1985 Canberra World Cup, she set a new personal record in 400 meters, placing seventh. She almost matched her Jakarta Championships appearance at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. She took the 100 meters silver in 11.67 seconds, just shy of losing the gold to Lydia de Vega. The 200 meters gold medalists in 53.44, 400 meters gold in 52.16, and 4 x 400 meters relay gold in 3:34.58, both of which were new Games records. "Usha is a first class athlete, a fierce competitor, and a superb runner to watch at the Games," British athletics coach Jim Alford said of her. She has all the potential. She can be world class if she is given careful direction.
At ATF meetings, Usha has won 13 gold from 1983 to 1989. Usha received 4 gold medals and one silver medal in the track and field events at Seoul in 1986. At the 6th Asian Track and Field Championship in Jakarta in 1985, she earned five gold medals. Her medals at the same meet set a record for a single athlete in a single international meet.
She is currently the chairwoman of the Indian Talent Organisation, which oversees the National Level Indian Talent Olympiad examinations in schools around India.
