He could have been the king of three countries, but Prince Michael of Greece (Prince Philip's cousin) turned his back on royal life to marry his dream woman, writes CHRISTOPHER WILSON ahead of his funeral today

He could have been king of at least three different countries, but instead he turned his back on royal life to party with the likes of Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol and marry the woman of his dreams. As a royal, Prince Michael of Greece's pedigree was second to none - he was the first cousin of three kings of Greece, Britain's Prince Philip and Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. The Prince, whose death at the age of 85 was announced at the weekend, escaped the stuffy confines of court life by falling in love with gifted artist Marina Karella. To marry her he was obliged to give up his succession rights - he was third in line to the Greek throne - and step back from royal duties. He didn't care. 'It was love at first sight,' he said, 58 years later. 'I was dancing with her at a party, and I just looked at her. It was like a revelation - it was her and no one else.'

Royals at the Olympics: Princess Anne competed in Montreal in 1976, her daughter Zara won silver in 2012 and Prince Albert of Monaco was a bobsledder at FIVE consecutive Games

As the Paris 2024 Olympic opening ceremony begins this evening, talented athletes from around the world will be preparing to compete for their country. Watching tonight's ceremony will be Princess Anne, who was herself a competitor at the 1976 Games in Montreal. But she is far from the only royal to have competed at the Olympics. Anne's daughter Zara went one better than her by actually winning a medal - a silver at the 2012 London Olympics as part of the British Equestrian team. Zara did not quite match her father Captain Mark Phillips, who won gold at the 1972 games in Munich. The Monaco royals are just as talented, with husband and wife Prince Albert and Princess Charlene having both taken part in the games, in bobsledding and swimming respectively. And King Constantine II of Greece won gold in sailing at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.

As Prince Michael of Kent turns 82, how the controversial father of Lady Gabriella Windsor was in Britain's reserve bobsleigh squad at 1972 Winter Olympics - before he married 'Princess Pushy'
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 4, 2024
As he turns 82 today, Prince Michael of Kent will likely be celebrating in a low-key fashion with close family. In recent months he and his wife Princess Michael (right, with her husband in 2022) have been supporting their daughter Lady Gabriella Windsor (pictured left with her father on her wedding day) after the death of her husband Thomas Kingston in February. In the weeks after her tragic loss, Lady Gabriella moved back in with her parents at their Kensington Palace apartment. Her father is the first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth, the brother of the Duke of Kent, a grandson of King George V and a cousin-twice-removed of Russia 's last Tsar, Nicholas II. In his younger years, Prince Michael was a competitive rower and bobsledder and was even on the reserve list for Britain's bobsleigh team (inset, competing for Great Britain in 1971) at the 1972 Winter Olympics. But unlike his daughter's impeccable public image, Prince Michael - who bears a striking resemblance to Tsar Nicholas - has hit the headlines for the wrong reasons in the past.

An examination of Prince Michael of Kent's life and his rivalry with wife Princess Michael
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 1, 2023
The late Queen Elizabeth's 80-year-old first cousin is not officially a working royal, but she has been more popular than ever. Prince Michael, the grandson of King George V and his cousin, was reportedly more popular than his older brother, the Duke of Kent, despite being unable to work. That's at least partially due to the various headline-making scandals of recent years, including much-criticized company interests in Russia and unashamed flogging of tacky royal souvenirs on US television. But it's the saga of his marriage to Princess Michael of Kent (pictured left), which has deservedly been dubbed 'Princess Pushy' by Princess Anne, that has really raised his profile.

Who is Thomas Troubridge? And how come 'Princess Pushy' of Kent has just passed a surprising wedding anniversary?
www.dailymail.co.uk,

It's impossible to remember a time when Baroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz was not Princess Michael of Kent, as it is today. Prince Michael, a cousin of late Queen Elizabeth II, was born in 1978 and has been a public figure ever since, known for her striking Germanic appearance as well as the 'Princess Pushy' moniker, which attracted more attention over time. Marie-Christine had been married once before, but Thomas Troubridge was the late Thomas Troubridge. They exchanged vows for this brief period of time at Chelsea Old Church in 1971, where ushers announced that the couple had "a raging dispute" in the vestry. Marie-Christine and Prince Michael were divorced six years after Marie-Christine first became involved with him.
