The King and Queen rounded off their visit to Australia with roaring crowds at the Sydney Opera House today as more than 8,000 people gathered to meet them. The couple were marking the iconic venue's 50th anniversary year, and were greeted upon their arrival by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and his wife Anna. They also met Opera House chair Michael McDaniel, its chief executive Kya Blondin and performers including British actress Joanna Lumley , who has a show there. In addition, Their Majesties posed with Sydney Harbour Bridge as a stunning backdrop and signed the visitors' book on the main concourse of the Opera House - before emerging on the steps to massive cheers as they waved to spectators. But it comes after the King was confronted earlier on for a second day by First Nations activists questioning the supremacy of the British monarchy in Australia.

ROBERT HARDMAN: Why I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a T-shirt proclaiming King Charles' Australia visit is the monarchy's 'farewell tour'
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 21, 2024
ROBERT HARDMAN: Royal visits to Australia have not been without their dramas. Queen Victoria's son, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh was the target of the country's first assassination attempt in 1868 when he was shot and seriously wounded by an Irish lunatic. In 1994, King Charles III, as Prince of Wales, was attacked by a gunman charging at him through a Sydney park, firing blanks, as it later transpired. During the Queen's 1954 tour, the first by a reigning monarch, thousands of people required first aid after crowd surges in Sydney while hundreds were injured when a grandstand collapsed in Cairns. Many years later, there was a frightful hoo-ha when the then-Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating, was seen to put an arm around her (she was not remotely bothered since he was steering her through a crowded reception at the time).

The headband, which she wore in July, was adorned with Arabic writing that read: 'I like chocolate milk.' Ms Thorpe uploaded a photo of herself wearing the headband alongside the caption: 'I wholeheartedly support this message. I hope you do too.'
Fury as radical Australian Indigenous senator Lidia Thorpe posts beheaded King Charles cartoon hours after hijacking and embarrassing King by accusing him of 'genocide' at royal welcome event
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 21, 2024
An Australian senator who berated King Charles III and shouted 'You are not my King' during a welcome reception has now posted a cartoon of the monarch beheaded. Senator Lidia Thorpe waited until the end of a landmark speech Charles gave at Australia's Parliament House in Canberra to verbally attack him and claim 'genocide' had been committed against the Commonwealth country's Indigenous people. And she has now reposted a cartoon of the monarch's head lying next to a crown on her Instagram story, after it was created by Matt Chun, co-editor of anti-imperialist publication The Sunday Paper. Questions have been raised over how 51-year-old Greens Senator Thorpe - who demanded a treaty between Australia's First Nations and its government - was able to speak for so long before being gently ushered from the Parliament House hall.

Republican leader promises to be on 'best behaviour' as King Charles and Camilla land in Sydney for start of historic six-day royal tour
www.dailymail.co.uk,

A republican politician promised to be on his 'best behaviour' before greeting King Charles and Queen Camilla tonight as the royal tour of Australia began. Chris Minns, premier of New South Wales , was among those welcoming the couple after they landed at Sydney Airport at 8.30pm local time (10.30am UK time). Before greeting the King at the airport, the 45-year-old Labor politician said: 'I'm a republican. You've asked me and I'm happy to tell you I'm a republican. But I'm going to treat him as an honoured guest in New South Wales, which he genuinely is. I hope he has a great time here and I'll be on my best behaviour.' Mr Minns was accompanied by his mother Cara after his wife Anna became ill at the last minute. Sources told the Australian Daily Telegraph that Anna did not have Covid but she 'wanted to take the precaution of not passing anything on to the King'. Mr Minns signed off £50,000 plans to light up the sails of the Sydney Opera House tonight with a loop of images from previous royal visits to welcome the royals .
A royal welcome! Sweet images of King Charles and Queen Camilla are projected onto Sydney Opera House as historic Australia tour gets underway
www.dailymail.co.uk,

King Charles and Queen Camilla were welcomed to Australia today as the sails of the Sydney Opera House were lit up with a loop of images from previous royal visits. The illumination had been due to begin at 8pm local time (10am UK time), 30 minutes before the couple were due to land at Sydney Airport - but ran into trouble. It was delayed by a Cunard cruise ship called the Queen Elizabeth which blocked the projector after failing to sail out on time because of bad weather. The lighting up of the landmark was organised despite the New South Wales (NSW) government having axed a similar proposal for the Coronation due to cost. It comes almost 18 months after NSW Premier Chris Minns dumped plans set by the former coalition state government to light up the venue in May 2023.
Royals Down Under! King Charles and Queen Camilla arrive to wet welcome in Sydney as historic Australia tour gets underway - after snub by state leaders
www.dailymail.co.uk,

King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived to a wet welcome in Australia today for an historic and hugely anticipated royal visit. The couple landed at Sydney Airport tonight at 8.30pm local time (10.30am UK time) on an Australian government plane, which had picked them up from Singapore after the couple flew there commercially. In a message posted on X before their arrival, Charles and Camilla said: 'Ahead of our first visit to Australia as King and Queen, we are really looking forward to returning to this beautiful country to celebrate the extraordinarily rich cultures and communities that make it so special. See you there!' The message was accompanied with archive footage of previous royal tours, including the late Queen's first visit in 1954. It is the King's first visit as the country's new sovereign and, fascinatingly, the first time in history a King of Australia has ever been to the country where he is head of state.

King Charles and Camilla to be honoured by Sydney Opera House lighting up for them - after state leaders said they were going to snub the Royals on Australia tour

The sails of the Sydney Opera House will be lit up for the arrival of King Charles and Queen Camilla in Australia amid a row over politicians refusing to meet them. The plans to illuminate the landmark also come despite the New South Wales (NSW) government having axed a similar proposal for the Coronation due to cost. The King and Queen are preparing to tour Sydney and Canberra, with the landmark now set to be lit up this Friday at 8pm with pictures of previous royal visits to Sydney. But it comes almost 18 months after NSW Premier Chris Minns dumped plans set by the former coalition state government to light up the venue for the Coronation. And all six of Australia's state premiers, including Mr Minns, have shunned the King's historic visit by saying they would not join a welcome reception in Canberra.
Anti-Charles' T-shirts sold before Australia trip: Fury as Republicans cash-in on royal visit by flogging 'poor taste' merchandise mocking cancer-stricken King
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 15, 2024
The Australian Republic Movement (ARM) have vowed to make the visit the 'Monarchy Farewell Oz Tour' - and are selling gig-style T-shirts at $34 (£18) each. The black tops, sold in men's and women's sizes, show AI-style pictures lampooning Charles, Queen Camilla and Prince William in sunglasses and jazzy clothing waving to crowds. There are also tea towels at $24.95 (£13) plus post and packaging and beer mats celebrating what the group hope will be the final royal tour of Australia, which starts on Friday. The campaign is also accompanied by a YouTube campaign video called Monarchy: The Farewell Oz Tour, which says will be 'in person, and with your money'. Royal commentator Phil Dampier told MailOnline: 'I'm sure they are trying to say that Charles won't visit Australia again as King because they want to ditch the monarchy. But given his age and his cancer battle these T-shirts are in very poor taste'.

Royal family fail to declare official gifts for past four years - despite past scandals including cash-for-honours and Meghan's £500,000 diamond earrings
www.dailymail.co.uk,

Buckingham Palace says records are still being updated and would be provided in future - but had been hampered by the change of reign, with Charles becoming King following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in October 2022. Anti-monarchy campaigners say they should be held to similar standards as MPs who must declare 'freebies' - such as the Taylor Swift concert tickets and clothing recently revealed to have been donated to Sir Keir Starmer and Labour ministers. The new concerns raised about an apparent lack of transparency on gifts to royal family members follow previous 'cash-for-honours' allegations. And there was uncertainty over £500,000 ear-rings worn by the Duchess of Sussex at an event in Fiji six years ago - later revealed to have been given to her by Saudi Arabia 's crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.
