KATHLEEN STOCK: The Tate Gallery in St Ives has decided that Marlow Moss, a trailblazing female artist from the early 20th century, may not have been a woman after all. Moss, who was born in London and later lived in Paris and Cornwall, was a cultural pioneer and a kind of a heroine to me. She created stunning, pared-down geometric paintings that were inspired by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian and then, minimalist sculptures later.

Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist, created the portrait in 1941 and was on display in MoMA in New York, but it has been in Dusseldorf, Germany, since 1980. The design features red, yellow, black, black, and blue adhesive tapes that form a lattice, as well as multicolored lines thickening at the bottom in a simplified skyline. According to curator Susanne Meyer-Büser, it should be hung so that the grid is thickened like a dark sky. The curator made the discovery while researching Mondrian's new exhibit earlier this year.
