It was Hollywood's most awaited wedding in years. Rock Hudson married Phyllis Gates, his agent's secretary, at the Biltmore Hotel in Santa Barbara, in November 1955, and stunned those who hoped that the world's best film actor, as well as the ostensibly shy bachelor, would finally settle down with a good woman. Hudson's female followers were obviously jealous. Nonetheless, this man was known as the 'Baron of Beefcake', with his rugged good looks and muscular physique. However, the glamorous couple's photographs and public appearances denied the majority of the rumors that there may be more to Hudson's reluctance to marry than a straightforward love of bachelordom. And this, of course, was the point of the union: Henry Willson, Hudson's top agent, allegedly orchestrated by him to conceal Hudson's career-killing trait: homosexuality.
