Diving career
The 10-meter platform competition is both as a solo entrant and as a teammate Leon Taylor in the synchronized event. Despite the obvious height discrepation (Peter is only 5 ft 6 in or 1.68 m), Leon is almost 5 ft 11.80 m) in a sport that normally demands as much uniformity as possible, they put on good synchronized results. In the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Waterfield and Taylor came in fourth place. They secured the silver medal in the men's synchronized 10-meter platform at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, marking the country's first Olympic diving medal since Brian Phelps in 1960.
Waterfield's best solo showing to date came when he captured the 10-meter gold medal in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. He received a silver medal in the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Waterfield was paired in the 2011 Olympics with teenager Tom Daley; Daley had finished 7th in the individual competition at the Beijing Olympics and was also a British and European champion. Waterfield and Daley finished fourth in the 10 m synchro diving competition in 2012, an agonizing 4th finish after losing their 4th dive.
