In his iconic hydroplane Bluebird, Donald Campbell made the fastest man on sea in almost 70 years. On the shores of Ullswater, in the Lake District, the daredevil set a new record by smashing the 200mph barrier in front of crowds. The Mail has discovered a collection of never-before-seen photographs of Campbell's preparations and trial runs for the historic record attempt, as it emerged that the bird is finally returning to Cumbria to be on public display. The evocative black and white photos depict a casual-looking Campbell, smoking and chatting to his workers in his workshop before deciding to don his trademark water suit and leather, Spitfire-type cap under his helmet, and joining Bluebird for a practice run. His wife, Dorothy, and mother, Lady Campbell, widow of land speed record holder Sir Malcolm, can also be seen enjoying the shoreline from a jetty. The photographs were taken by press photographer Peter Price, but the photographs were never released for some reason - perhaps because Campbell broke the record immediately thereafter.
