Lively has won both the Booker Award (Moon Tiger, 1987) and the Carnegie Medal for British children's books (The Ghost of Thomas Kempe, 1973).

Personal life

Jack Lively, a scholar and political theorist, married him in 1957. They had a son and daughter. In 1998, her husband died. She currently lives in London. Paintings, woodcuts, and Egyptian potsherds are among her house's treasures.
