Paul Bevan Lieberstein (born February 22, 1967) is an American actor, screenwriter, and television producer.
On the NBC sitcom The Office, he is a winner of the Primetime Emmy Award for both as writer, producer, and as a support cast member.
From seasons five to eight, he appeared as the series' showrunner.
Early life
Lieberstein, the son of Judith and Stanley Lieberstein, grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut. He is Jewish.
He played the vibraphone in band at Conard High School, where he wrote his first sitcom with some classmates and played the vibraphone in band. He later attended Hamilton College, where he joined Chi Psi and graduated in 1989 with a major in economics (he "wanted to be a financier of some sort"). Lieberstein made a nexus in the storyline of several episodes of the show that Andy Bernard, a Cornell employee, appeared in the storyline.
Lieberstein left college for New York City, where his first work was as an auditor at Peat Marwick International, a six-month career. "Working as little as [he] could write," he continued with part-time work at his father's law firm.

Lieberstein was married at the New York City restaurant Battery Gardens for the second time, to Janine Serafin Poreba. They live in Los Angeles, California, in the Brentwood neighborhood.

Career
Lieberstein and a writing partner became an William Morris agent and relocated to Los Angeles, just off Broadway Boulevard. He landed his first writing position on Clarissa Explains It All, but he was fired after one season when he and his writing partner split up.
Lieberstein worked in a few other writer's rooms, including Weird Science and The Naked Truth, before his brother-in-law Greg Daniels asked him to join the King of the Hill staff.
Lieberstein served as a co-executive producer on 25 episodes of Season 6 of The Drew Carey Show, as well as "Drew and the Motorcycle" and "Drew and the Activist, Part I"), and "Buzze Liked His Beer," the season's opening "Drew Pops Something on Kate" (which he also wrote, as well as "Drew and the Activist, Part I) and "Buzze Liked
Lieberstein appeared on the third and final seasons of the television drama series The Newsroom, as producer. In November 2017, it was confirmed that Kevin Etten would be replaced by Ghosted's showrunner. Lieberstein wrote and directed his first feature film, Song of Back and Neck, which made it into the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018. He announced plans for a sitcom about office life on April 3, 2020, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the project eventually became known as Out of Office.
Lieberstein will be one of the executive producers of The Office, according to Variety magazine on June 12, 2008. From the start of the US version, he was in the writer's room from the start and was requested by Greg Daniels to perform as well as Daniels' request that certain of the writers know what it was like on the other side of the camera. Lieberstein has said he "attended 'The Office' acting school" and was often dismissed by Steve Carell's improv during scenes.
Lieberstein would relegate from his showrunner role to concentrate on a proposed spin-off film starring Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute, which was tentatively titled The Farm on March 22, 2012. Lieberstein had intended to be the showrunner, but NBC had not confirmed that it was not accepting the series in October 2012.
