An inquest heard today that the mother of tragic schoolgirl Molly Russell's screamed' after discovering the lifeless body of her 14-year-old daughter, who died after discovering suicide techniques online. In a moving speech read in her behalf at North London Coroner's Court on Wednesday, Janet Russell said she kept calling Molly's name after finding she had died. If social media algorithms played a role in Molly's death in November 2017, it will be a 'watershed moment' for tech giants. Molly was posting up to 130 times a day in the months leading up to her death, according to previous hearings, she posted tens of thousands of posts on several websites, including content that 'raised questions.' Molly, a Harrow woman, is said to have seen content related to anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide before committing suicide, causing her family to lobby for improved internet security. Molly Russell's mother, Ian Russell, said she 'hid her demons' from her family and then died from the 'isolation' she felt so deeply.' Executives from Meta and Pinterest have been asked by the coroner to fly from the United States to demonstrate how social media businesses' algorithms keep people interested and may have contributed to Molly's death. Molly's family also wants the inquest to review 29 internal Meta files, which are allegedly funded studies into the effects of self-harm and suicide on teenagers.
