Paolo Roberto Career

Boxing career

Roberto was born in Upplands Väsby, Stockholm, Sweden. He started competing in kickboxing, where he became Sweden's champion, and before that, Taekwondo, where he became Nordic champion and repeated Swedish champion. He had been infamous for battling a lot on the street.

He started his career with four straight victories before running into difficulties. He returned to the ring to be stopped in the second round against John Duckworth after losing a six-round draw against Roy Dehara. Paolo refused to give up, according to his coach, and that's probably why the referee called off the brawl. When asked about the incident, Paolo simply said that if he gave up on a street fight, he would die. He won fifteen straight fights before going on Javier Castillejo, the WBC light middleweight champion, who was disqualified in the fifth round due to referee stoppage. At the time, Roberto was behind on all scorecards.

Roberto gained weight to challenge fellow countryman Armand Krajnc for his WBO middleweight title. He had four victories in between those fights. In the first round of the war against Krajnc Roberto, the champion was bouncing on his feet. His opponent was stunned by a right hook, who was forced to cover up against the wires. Krajnc had figured out his opponent and outboxed the smaller challenger later in the fight.

Roberto returned to his original weight class welterweight where he defeated Raul Eduardo Bejarano in the vacant WBC International Welterweight title. He then vacated his belt to face Wayne Martell for the WBO Inter-Continental welterweight crown. Roberto controlled the contest and was winning when Martell's eye had gotten so bad, the ring doctor decided he had enough. Roberto was knocked out in the second round of his WBO title defense against Sebastian Andres Lujan. He never returned to fight competitively.

Both of Roberto's boxing matches took place outside of Sweden, including his championship matches, which were held in land, since pro boxing has been outlawed in Sweden since 1969.
