Career
In Tran, a fundin was born. When Aub Lawson, an Australian champion, suggested that he ride in Britain and join the Norwich Stars, riding for them from 1955 to 1964, when the Firs stadium closed. He rode for Long Eaton 1966, Belle Vue 1967, Wembley 1970, but then will always be remembered for the 1970s, when the Norwich Stars were revered by the home fans.
He made 15 World Final appearances, including third three times and third three times as well as his five victories. In 1960, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967, and 1970, as well as the Speedway World Pairs Championship in 1968, he helped Sweden win the World Team Cup in 1960, 1963, 1964, 1964, 1967, and 1970. Many believe him to be the greatest rider of all time, and the Speedway World Cup has been named after him. Fundin won the World Team Cup (including qualifying rounds and the final in Gothenburg) undefeated in 1960, a feat not matched until Australia's Jason Crump won the 2001 Speedway World Cup undefeated.
Fundin made several trips to Australia during his career, with resounding success. He competed in Test Matches against the Australians, including Sweden and several "Rest of the World" teams, including the South Australian Championship (1966, 1967, 1970, 1970) and the Western Australian Championship at the Claremont Speedway in Perth in 1969.
In 1961, Fundin received the Svenska Dagger Medal (shared with Sten Lundin).
