Clubs have their last chance to improve ahead of the rest of the season as we enter the final hours of the January transfer window. Teams at the top of the pack will be looking for titles and European qualification, while those at the bottom will be hoping that a new addition would keep them away from relegation problems. In the midst of several FFP probes, Everton and Nottingham Forest have been charged with breaching the top flight's financial laws this month, and it underscores the balancing act clubs must play to ensure immediate success with financial stability. However, there are still many deals in the offing that will run right up to the 11 p.m. deadline on Thursday, with some players facing uncertain futures.

In the January transfer window, only two days remain for clubs to do business, and late fireworks remain elusive. This winter, Premier League clubs have cut back on spending, but a number of clubs may have to loosen the purse strings before the deadline is set. Tottenham Hotspur is one of those clubs considering a late bid for Connor Gallagher, according to reports. Chelsea midfielder Chelsea has long been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this month, as the Blues continue to balance the books in order to comply with Financial Fairplay legislation.

As then-boss Steve Cooper's side began preparing for his team's first season back in the Premier League, the Belgian midfielder arrived at the City Ground in the summer of 2022. Mangala was destined to Stuttgart for £12.75 million, following Taiwo Awoniyi and Moussa Niakhate in making the switch to the English top-flight with the Tricky Trees.
Nottingham Forest will seek transfer help from the head of recruitment in 2022 as the team waits to hear FFP's decision before starting their January business
www.dailymail.co.uk,
January 11, 2024
TOM COLLOMOSSE: Nottingham Forest will get transfer advice from the man who was fired as the head of recruitment more than a year ago. Following a audit of George Syrianos' summer transfer market by owner Evangelos Marinakis and then-sporting director Filippo Giraldi, the pair was fired in October 2022. Forest signed 23 new players during the season's rise to the Premier League, but they only gained five points from their first nine games before being fired. Giraldi did not live long, six months in his job before he resigned in April. Despite the fact that Syrianos ceased full-time work, he rejoined Forest last summer and continues to work in recruitment through his company Fenida. Fenida's website says it offers 'advanced football analysis' and that it has clients in La Liga, the Bundesliga, and the Champions League. Syrianos are still attending games at the City Ground, and they have been seen in the directors' box.
TWENTY-SEVEN is on the brink of a ban: Man United captain Bruno Fernandes, £157 million-worth of Chelsea, and an in-form Arsenal actor are among the three players following a stringent tightrope
www.dailymail.co.uk,
December 5, 2023
Bruno Fernandes is one of a number of Premier League players expected to be on their best behavior in the next five games in order to avoid a one-game ban. All accrued yellow cards become ineffective after 19 games of the Premier League season, meaning that players on four, nine, or 14 yellow cards will not be allowed to receive bans for additional cards. With 14 games remaining, it means that there are five top-flight players remain to avoid another booking and possibly not disappoint their team as we enter the holiday season.

On Monday, the best goalkeeper in the world and match-deciding howler on Sunday. Emi Martinez knows that elite sports bring the best back to Earth, and after Aston Villa's humiliating loss at Nottingham Forest, Emi Martinez admits that feeling isn't always right. After his heroic performances helped his country win last year's World Cup last year, the Argentina star collected the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or ceremony last week. Martinez's week in Qatar will be one of his best memories, but he'll need to forget his afternoon at the City Ground as soon as possible. Martinez sailed to his left to Orel Mangala's 25-yard effort early in the second half, but the ball did not have a good enough link, causing the ball to spin back off the bar and into the net, with Villa trailing 1-0. Martinez's mistake left Villa with too much to do despite Forest already leading off Ola Aina's fifth-minute strike. Forest won for the first time in the league this season after beating Chelsea on September 2.

The result meant Austria, who had a good physical game, increased to seven points from three games, three more than Belgium, who were playing their second group game in Germany next year, aiming for the finals next year. From a 21st minute corner, Austria took the lead across to the back post, where Michael Gregoritsch kicked the ball in. Orel Mangala, a Belgium midfielder, stuck out his heel in a sloppy attempt to block the ball, but only succeeded in diverting it away from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Nottingham Forest back among Europe's elite - spending more on transfers than Barca and Real Madrid

Forest's owner, Evangelos Marinakis (inset left), told Nottingham that he would provide the 'ammunition' to ensure success when the club won promotion by the play-offs in May, despite a top-flight absence of 23 years. The shipping magnate has certainly put his money where his mouth is, spending more than £160 million, which is a record for a team recently promoted to the Premier League. With 21 new arrivals (and counting), one wonders if Marinakis - and the followers - would even recognize any of his East Midlands outfit's Garibaldi red, including Morgan Gibbs-White (centre) landed for a fee that could have climbed to £42.5 million. Out of the 16 players involved against Spurs, ten were new recruits. Forest's summer investment has outstripped Barcelona (right), Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain (left), and more than the Dutch top-flight (inset right) combined.

MARTIN SAMUEL: The problem with VAR? It doesn't appear that straightforward or apparent mistakes are made
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 15, 2022
MARTIN SAMUEL - CHIEF SPORTS WRITER: The overriding issue with VAR is that it doesn't deliver what was promised. It doesn't mean that it is wrong and obvious. It is ruled on the highest margins; it makes matters of opinion black and white. Faced with injustice, the nun is indifferent. And it isn't as advertised. Michail Antonio mistakenly ran into Orel Mangala in the build-up to a West Ham goal at Nottingham Forest on Sunday. He wasn't directly involved in the deposition; it was a decoy mission, and referee Robert Jones saw no foul. He was contacted, but by over-reaching VAR Michael Salisbury, he was prompted to reconsider again. In those situations, a strong man has to fight. Even though Jones was correct, he wasn't smart. He set the goal off. VAR had sorted out a problem that was in fact no more than a point of view. Salisbury's career may not have been more valuable than Jones'. That call was not specific and obvious.
