Ong Kim Seng Life

Ong Kim Seng (born in Singapore and has been a full-time artist since 1985) has been active in Singapore.

Ong is the first and only Singaporean to have been recognized by the prestigious 138-year-old American Watercolor Society (AWS), which has won six awards in Singapore, China, Japan, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Middle East, Taipe, and the ASEAN countries. He has won six awards, most notably in 1992.

He is also the first Asian artist outside of the United States to be accepted into AWS.

Early life

Ong, the only child, grew up in a kampung in Tiong Bahru under the custody of his mother, Goh Choon Hoon. His father died in 1952 when he was still young. His mother worked as a washerwoman and grass cutter, so she could help her son attend kindergarten. Ong attended Radin Mas Primary School in 1959 and then later at Pasir Panjang Secondary School. Ong had shown an interest in art since childhood, but his mother hoped he'd rather become a clerk or a teacher with his education than have the ludicrous dream of becoming an artist. He started painting, beginning with pastels and oil and then on to watercolour painting in earnest since 1960. Chia Wai Hon, an artist, writer, and lecturer, joined him in a painting group at the Singapore River.

Ong left school in 1962 and then joined an advertising company, where he worked as a bill collector. After four years with the British Naval Base in Sembawang, he found his next job as a policeman. In 1971, he lost his career after the British retaliated their troops from Singapore. He served as a welder at Pulau Bukom, a line technician at a semiconductor company called National Semiconductor, and an audio-visual/graphic technician at Colombo Plan Staff College for Technical Education. He had never stopped painting in his career. Ong had the opportunity to exhibit his watercolor works at the Meyer Gallery, curated by gallery owner and arts patron Della Butcher in 1974. Ong, a student at the University of Manila, decided to become a full-time artist despite having to care for an elderly mother and being married with three children.

Private life

Ong's hobbies include travelling, hiking, jogging, swimming, and cycling. He enjoys meeting people and discovering their way of life. In the past, he has participated in travelling-cumpainting expeditions, while "recording the disappearance of exotic lifestyles" in his paintings.

Ong, a ardent hiker, has visited Sinkiang, China, the Nepalese Himalayas, and the Tibetan Plateau numerous times to paint and hike.

He is an avid painter who is also an artist.
