'Having veterans in my own family, and having spent two years at the Air Force Academy, my mission is now to support these heroes and families,' Skenes, 21, told the Gary Sinise Foundation. In his Pirates debut on Saturday against the Cubs, Skenes struck out seven in front of Dunne - an LSU Gymnastics star and women's leader top NIL deal earner. It's unclear if those strikeouts will contribute to his charitable cause.

After Buccos star Oneil Cruz fractured his left ankle while colliding with Chicago catcher Seby Zavala, the Pirates and White Sox benches were cleared for a near-brawl on Sunday in Pittsburgh. In the sixth inning at Pittsburgh's PNC Park, the 6-foot-7 Cruz, who has made a cult-like figure for his raw talent and athleticism, was on third base. Cruz came home when Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes ran a chopper up the third base line, but so did Yoan Moncada's throw. Cruz slid late in the game, perhaps not expecting the throw to land so quickly, but he collided with Zavala after his left ankle rolled awkwardly.

On Wednesday, Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Oneil Cruz went for a ball 122.4 miles against the Braves to record an exit-velocity record for the Statcast era, which began in baseball in 2015. Giancarlo Stanton, the New York Yankees' slugger, set the previous four records, all between 122.2 miles and 121.3 mph. Stanton has hit 16 of the top 21 exist velocities. Cruz broke a first-pitch slider off the right-field wall in the third inning off Braves pitcher Kyle Wright's third inning. Unfortunately, he may have struck the ball too hard, and right fielder Ronald Acucub of Atlanta quickly collected the ricochet and relayed the throw to the infield to prevent Cruz from qualifying second.

As the Pittsburgh Pirates took the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday, Rodolfo Castro safely slid into third base in the fifth inning. His phone, on the other hand, did not. Since teammate Oneil Cruz crashed a single into center field, the 23-year-old Castro had to make a dash to place third, and his cellphone fell out of his back left pocket as he slid in headfirst.
