Ondrej Mares Life

Ondrej Mares (11 February 1949 – 19 March 2008) was a Czech-Australian artist and furniture designer who lived in Macclesfield, South Australia.

His work has been seen in Adelaide, Sydney, and Prague.

Mares is best known for his Kachina pieces.

He was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, which had the effect of transferring his attention from larger pieces to smaller more compact pieces.

In addition, clues to his illness were present in later works, including his 'Stem Cells' in Kachina.

Mares' work has been described as "jamming as much knowledge, humour, and detailence was built into each of his arte povera pieces, which are usually around 50 cm (20 in) high, as is aesthetically possible."

Early life

Mares began his work as a toolmaker in Prague and was extremely gifted in this field, earning the rank of Toolmaker First Class before the Prague Spring of 1968. Mares recalled going to work one morning but to discover several tanks parked outside the factory at which he worked. Mares' tools were robbed around this time, leaving him with a loan in the state that had to be paid off. Mares and another toolmaker worked nights until the debt was paid, and he then decided to leave Czechoslovakia and emigrate.

Mares worked in various Australian locations, including Darwin and Broome. Mares worked in his own workshop in Macclesfield, South Australia, which is now exporting furniture and sculpture from 1975 to 1974. Mares earned a Diploma in Art and Craft in South Australia in 1979. He was a skilled carpenter, and he built his house in Macclesfield as well as a hut in Goolwa. Mares developed his own unique style of work during this period, which was evident in many furniture designs and some sculptures. His rate of work was high, and his daughter recalled that he was always working in his workshop from early morning to dusk.
