Olli Juolevy (Finnish pronunciation: [ol juole]; born 5 May 1998) is a Finnish professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the San Diego Gulls in the American Hockey League (AHL), although he is under contract with the National Hockey League's Anaheim Ducks (NHL). In the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, he was ranked fifth overall by the Vancouver Canucks. Juolevi, a Finnish boy who was born and raised in Finland, competed in the Jokerit program before heading to North America to play major junior hockey with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL)'s London Knights in 2015. He was drafted by the Canucks after one season in London.
Juolevi has competed in three World Junior Championships, winning gold at the 2016 tournament.
Playing career
Juolevi began playing junior hockey in Finland for Jokerit's U16 team in 2012–13. He was playing for Jokerit's U20 side in the Jr. A SM-liiga by the following year. He was named to the league's First All-Star Team and named Rookie of the Year after scoring 32 points (6 goals and 26 assists) in 44 games. Juolevi was selected 45th overall by the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) at the 2015 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, during the off-season. Juolevi signed to the Knights shortly after, ending his junior career in Finland.
Juolevi finished third among OHL rookie defensemen and 13th among defensemen in 2015–16, with 42 points (9 goals and 33 assists) in 57 games. He was chosen to the OHL Third All-Star Team and Second All-Rookie Team. He recorded 14 points (3 goals and 11 assists) in 18 games, ranked second among all defensemen as the Knights defeated the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL champions in 2016. Juolevi had four assists in four games and was named to the tournament's All-Star Team, assisting London in the transition to a national championship.
Juolevi, who was instrumental in London's championship season, was highly regarded by scouts. Among draft-eligible players competing in North America, NHL Central Scouting ranked him fifth, lauding his offensive play. He was the first defenceman chosen by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, finishing fifth overall. Juolevi's first professional deal came on August 5th, 2016 when he agreed to a three-year, entry-level deal with the Canucks.
Juolevi was assigned to the Utica Comets, Vancouver's AHL affiliate, to begin the 2018-19 season. Juolevi was suspended for the remainder of the year after scoring 13 points in 18 games in his first AHL season.
Juolevi was sent to Utica for the 2019-20 season following his injury-shortened season. Juolevi sustained an injury in November 2019, but returned three weeks later. Juolevi would play in 45 games with Utica, scoring 25 points before the 2019–20 AHL season was suspended and then cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Juolevi made his NHL debut with the Canucks during the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, appearing in the fourth and final game of Vancouver's Qualifying Round series against the Minnesota Wild. In the game, Vancouver defeated Minnesota 5–4 to eliminate Minnesota and advance to the First Round, with John 6:16 playing 6:16.
Juolevi's first appearance on Vancouver's roster came in the following year. In a 7–1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on January 25, he scored his first career goal.
Juolevi was traded to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Noah Juulsen and Juho Lammikko on October 10th, 2021. He began his career on the Panthers in 2021–22, adding depth to the blueline while remaining a healthy scratch. He was still a member of the Charlotte Checkers on conditioning before returning to the Panthers and making his Arizona debut against the Arizona Coyotes on December 10, 2021. Juolevi was suspended by the Panthers on waivers for ten games before being suspended on waivers on March 5th. Juolevi's time with the Panthers came to an end the following day after being proclaimed by the Detroit Red Wings.
Juolevi's one-year, two-way contract with the Anaheim Ducks began on July 27, 2022.
