Nicholas Colasanto (January 19, 1924-1985) was an American actor and television director best known for his role as "Coach" Ernie Pantusso in the American sitcom Cheers.
He served in the United States Navy during WWII and then attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in the 1950s.
Early life
Colasanto studied at Bryant University (now located in Smithfield, Rhode Island) and was an excellent soldier of World War II, during which he served as a coxswain in the United States Navy. He aspired to work as an accountant for a Saudi Arabian firm about 1954. In lieu, he attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He was of Italian descent.
Career
Colasanto is best known for his role as Coach Ernie Pantusso, a character on TV's Cheers; he has also directed episodes of several television series, including Hawaii Five-O, Starsky & Hutch, Bonanza, Columbo, and CHiPs. He has appeared in feature films, including The Counterfeit Killer (1968), Fat City (1972), and Alfred Hitchcock's Family Plot (1976).
Colasanto was in demand as an actor and director in the mid-1970s, but he was diagnosed with heart disease, which was exacerbated by his alcoholism. He became a founder of Alcoholics Anonymous from March 31, 1976, and went sober in the same year. In the late 1970s, he began having trouble finding managerial positions as his health was weakening. Tommy Como, the gang boss of Raging Bull (1980), was his last major film role.
Colasanto was planning to retire when he was introduced to him on Cheers by Coach Ernie Pantusso. Coach Joe will play his best-known role. Colasanto's health had significantly deteriorated by the third season of Cheers. His coworkers noted his weight loss, but Colasanto kept the severity of his illness private. He was admitted to a local hospital for water in his lungs shortly after the Christmas holiday in 1984. During Colasanto's season of production, co-star Ted Danson said he had trouble remembering his lines.
Colasanto's doctor advised him not to return to work the week after a two-week absence. Despite appearing in the cold start of the third-season finale episode "Rescue Me" (1985), Colasanto's last full episode was "Cheerio Cheers" (1985), which was shot in late November 1984.
