Neo Rauch (born 18 April 1960 in Leipzig, East Germany; German: ['ne?o]] is a German artist whose paintings emphasize the intersection of his personal history and industrial alienation's politics.
Although Rauch hesitates to identify himself with surrealism, his work reflects the influence of socialist realism, and owes a debt to Surrealists Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte.
He studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, Germany, and works as the principal artist of the New Leipzig School.
Galerie EIGEN + ART Leipzig/Berlin & David Zwirner, New York, represent the artist. Rauch's paintings portray a narrative intention, but closer inspection, as art historian Charlotte Mullins explains, "robbery ensues; architects in uniform from earlier times shame men and women from other centuries; while industrial styles change at a whim."
Life
When he was four weeks old, Rauch's parents died in a train crash. Hanno Rauch was 21, and Helga Wand 19 years old, at the time when both of them studied art at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts). Neo Rauch grew up with his grandparents in Aschersleben and passed his Abitur exam at Thomas-Müntzer-Oberschule (now Gymnasium Stephaneum). He studied painting at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig and then became Masterstudent with Professor Arno Rink (1981–1986) and Professor Bernhard Heisig (1986–1990). After the fall of GDR Rauch, he served as an assistant to Arno Rink and Sighard Gille at the Leipziger Akademie from 1993 to 1998.
He was a pickor for EASTinternational with Gerd Harry Lybke in 2004.
He was Professor at the Leipziger Hochschule for Grafik und Buchkunst from August 2005 to February 2009. "Man muss eilen, if man still wants to see something") at Neuss' Gut Selikum. Timm Rautert was curator for the exhibition "Man muss eilen, if man still has to see something."
Rauch, his partner and artist Rosa Loy work at a former cotton mill in Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei, where he says, "It is the place of concentration and inspiration." Here are the best suggestions that have occurred to me. He was listed as one of Germany's most wealthy 1,001 people and families by the monthly business publication Manager Magazin in 2017.
Ne Rauch – Gefährten und Begleiter, directed by Nicola Graef, is the subject of a 2016 film Neo Rauch – Gefährten und Begleiter.
