Neil Bogart Career

Life and career

Neil Scott Bogatz, Jr., was born in the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital, central Brooklyn, New York City, and the son of Ruth (Markoff) and Al M. Bogatz. His family was Jewish. He grew up in the Glenwood Houses, a housing project in Brooklyn's Flatlands neighborhood. He performed as a singer in the 1960s, using the name Neil Scott, long before he assumed responsibility for Cameo-Parkway Records in Michigan. Bogart became an executive at Buddah Records after Cameo-Parkway was closed down by the government for stock theft in 1968. During his time at Cameo-Parkway and Buddha, he has been credited with being a key figure in the burgeoning of bubblegum pop music.

He began Casablanca in 1973, first signing Kiss, and later became identified with the rise of disco by promoting the careers of artists like Donna Summer and the Village People (the Casablanca roster also included rock bands like The Godz, T.Rex, Fanny, and The Hudson Brothers, but the label became best known for its disco product). With the signing of George Clinton's Parliament in 1974, the label was also known for tapping into the funk market.

He formed Boardwalk Records and jumped on the latest wave wave train, just as disco was in decline. He had signed Joan Jett and Harry Chapin, among his other notable signings.
