Milton Nathaniel Barnes, born 6 April 1954, is a Liberian politician and member of the Liberian Destiny Party (LDP).
Early life
Barnes was born in Monrovia, Liberia, to Roland T. and Eudora N. Barnes. He was the second of four children in his family. Barnes spent his formative years in Harper and Monrovia.
He graduated from high school at the College of West Africa before spending a term at the University of Liberia. He started as an intern in Liberia's banking system before heading to the United States for college.
Barnes attended Rider University (then Rider College) in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, in 1975, where he majored in Finance and graduated with a B.Sc. Degrees are based on experience. Barnes earned an MBA in Finance and Banking from Pace University in New York City in 1979.
Personal life
Barnes married Dawn Cooper Barnes, the daughter of Henry Nehemiah Cooper, M.D. (1927–1984) and Izetta Cooper, co-founders of the Monrovia-based Cooper Clinic. Barnes' mother taught at Dawn's elementary school, and Dawn's father was the Barnes' family doctor. Dawn Barnes has written, directed, and produced the films: The Cry of the Pepperbirds (2001), The Spiritual Life of African Dance (2001), and Children of Gold (2004). WE ON IT, a Liberian television comedy film, was also produced. (2001-2003), an international broadcaster. The couple have six children.
Aurora Solutions, Inc., a Barnes-founded consulting company in 2010. He has been a Lecturer at the University of Liberia and African Methodist Episcopal University since 2010.

Political career
Barnes was appointed Minister of Finance, Republic of Liberia, in September 1999. He was the chief architect of Liberia's fiscal policy and oversaw and introduced a new national tax code in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund's Fiscal Affairs Department. He was in charge of this position until mid-2002.
Barnes formed the Liberia Destiny Party, a new political party founded in 2005 (LDP). Barnes finished 12th out of 22 candidates in the 2005 Liberia presidential general election, receiving 1.0% of the vote. During the subsequent runoff election, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who would become Africa's first democratically elected female president, eventually endorsed her.
Liberia was one of the founding members of the United Nations, ratifying the charter in 1945. Barnes was elected Permanent Representative of Liberia's Republic from May 2006 to 2008.
Barnes served as Ambassador from Liberia to Cuba from 2006 to 2008, as well as Ambassador to the United Nations. He was instrumental in the establishment and solidifying of diplomatic relations with Cuba.
President Johnson Sirleaf appointed Ambassador Milton Nathaniel Barnes as Liberia's new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States of America in 2008. He served in this capacity from 2010 to 2010.
Barnes declared in January 2022 that he intends to run as an independent in the forthcoming 2023 Liberian presidential election, as "Reconciliation, Positive Change, Self-Reliance," and the emergence of a New Breed of Liberian Leaders with the key attributes of character, Competence, and Courage.
