Nancy Dickerson Career

Early career

Nancy Conners Hanschman, a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was born Nancy Dickerson, who attended Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, for two years before transferring to the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she received a degree in education in 1948.

She worked as a Milwaukee grade school teacher before transferring to Washington, D.C., in 1951. She took courses in rhetoric and drama at The Catholic University of America to develop the skills she would need to pursue her dream of becoming a broadcaster. It was in her next role, as a Senate Foreign Relations Committee analyst, that she'd develop a passion for government's inner workings, which would define her career for more than four decades.
