Hendrik Egnatius Botha (born 27 February 1958) is a South African former rugby union player who has competed for Northern Transvaal and South Africa (the Springboks). In 1979, 1981, 1985, and 1987, he was named Rugby Player of the Year.
Botha spent the majority of his time in the fly-half and is now a rugby commentator for South African M-Net and Supersport TV channels.
He is also the Head Coach of the Indian Men's and Women's rugby union teams.
Personal life
Botha and Karen, a former Springbok athlete and long jump record holder, have three children together, Kyla (1991) Gaeby (1998) and Lee-gre (2003).
Family and early career
Botha was born in Breyten, South Africa, and attended Homalanga (now Mpumalanga), and went to school at the Hool Hendrik Verwoerd in Pretoria. Botha aspired to play competitive baseball as a youth and applied for a sports scholarship in the United States. Botha was also an outstanding schools cricket and tennis player as well as a hurdles competitor.
Botha was then selected to compete for the South African under-20 rugby team, where he caught the attention of the selectors while still a student at the University of Pretoria.
Botha was in his first Test for the Springboks against South America on April 26, 1980, aged 22 in the flyhalf position against South America at Wanderers, Johannesburg.
International career
Being paid to play rugby was always a controversial topic in the pre-professional age that Botha participated in. Despite being generously paid "under the table," Botha was of the opinion that he could do better in professional sports, and he travelled to the United States in 1983 on the invitation of the Dallas Cowboys to try out as a placekicker. Despite this, the move was not fruitful, and he returned to South Africa to continue his rugby career. Naas spent time in the United States playing rugby with the Dallas Harlequins, where he accompanied them to the 1984 USA National Club Championships.
Botha moved to Rovigo, Italy, where he was coached by former Springboks coach Nelie Smith and competed alongside South Africans Tito Lupini and Gert Smal, primarily for financial reasons. Botha appeared in 119 games for Rovigo, 1988 and 1990), putting an end to a nine-year drought, as well as a quarter final (1993). The Botha-era is also remembered in Rovigo, Italy's most rugby-addicted city, where the former footballer delights in a certain Maradona/Napoli aura.
