Modestas Paulauskas (19 March 1945) is a former Soviet and Lithuanian professional basketball coach and basketball player. He was the youngest EuroBasket MVP in history when he was only 20 years old at the time when he was honoured.
He is known for his ability and for being one of the best Lithuanian basketball players of all time, as well as his outstanding dribbling skills.
In 1965–1967, and 1969–1972, he was voted as the Lithuanian Sportsman of the Year, a record seven times.
In Munich, the Soviet Union national basketball team's player won Olympic gold in 1972. In 1991, he was named one of FIBA's Top 50 Players.
Playing career
Despite receiving notice from teams based in Western Europe and the National Basketball Association, Paulauskas spent his entire club career with algiris Kaunas, despite gaining interest from teams based in Western Europe and the National Basketball Association (NBA). He could not attend them for political reasons, as Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union at the time, and people could not travel abroad in a non-traditional manner. He was also wanted to join CSKA Moscow, Serbia's biggest rival, but he declined.
Paulauskas was a member of the Soviet Union national basketball teams that received the bronze medal at the 1968 Summer Olympic Games and the gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games. In 1969, Paulauskas became the head of the senior Soviet national team.
Coaching career
Paulauskas served as a mentor for the Soviet Union junior national teams from 1977 to 1989 after stepping away from playing basketball. He was the head coach of his hometown team, algiris Kaunas, in the early 1990s. He taught basketball in schools, both in Lithuania and Russia, after that.
