Personal life
Saku Koivu's older brother was the longtime captain of the Montreal Canadiens and alternate captain for the Anaheim Ducks before his retirement in 2014. Jukka Koivu, the former head coach of TPS for whom both Saku and Mikko have participated, is their father. Tuomo Ruutu of the New Jersey Devils and Koivu's former Minnesota teammate Kurtis Foster are among Koivu's friends. Playing career
Koivu first started playing in the Finnish junior leagues and joined TPS of the SM-liiga as a 17-year-old in the 2000–01 season, the same team for which older brother Saku also played. He was voted sixth overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota Wild and has continued to play with TPS for three seasons.
While the NHL season was postponed, Koivu went to North America in 2004-05 to play for Minnesota's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Houston Aeros. He made his NHL debut with the Wild last season, scoring 21 points in his rookie season. On July 18, he signed a one-year deal with the Wild.
Koivu's record in 2006-07 was boosted by a career-high 20 goals, 34 assists, and 54 points. Injuries slowed him down in his third season, but defenceman Mattias hlund retaliated against Koivu's unpenalized elbow and slashed him, breaking a bone in Koivu's leg. Due to the injury, hlund was given a four-game suspension, and Koivu missed 24 games.
The Wild re-signed Koivu to a four-year, $13 million deal worth $3.25 million per year on June 30, 2007.
Koivu was named as a permanent alternate captain for the entire season, as well as teammate Andrew Brunette, assuming they were not captains for the month (the Wild captaincy was rotated among the players on a monthly basis each season). But Koivu joined the team captain for the months of October and November in 2008. Despite rumors that then-Wild Head Coach Jacques Lemaire was close to ending the captain rotation and naming Koivu the permanent captain, he was sent by Kim Johnsson in December, reverting to his position as the alternate captain. After just a month of hiatus, Koivu was once more honoured with the Wild captaincy in January 2009.
Koivu set a record for most assists in a game against the Florida Panthers on October 16th. As the Wild defeated Florida 6–2, he also scored a goal for a career-high five-point game. In July 2009, it was revealed that Koivu would be on the front page of Finland's version of EA Sports' video game NHL 10. By NHL.com, he was also named the best Finn in the League.
On October 20, 2009, Koivu was named the first permanent captain in the Wild franchise history. He signed a then-franchise-record seven-year, $47 million contract extension on July 16, 2010, which went into operation during the 2011–12 season.
Koivu was selected to his first NHL All-Star Game on January 12, 2012. However, he was unable to function due to injury and was replaced by Oilers forward Jordan Eberle.
Koivu scored three points in a 6–0 victory over the New York Islanders, converting him into the Wild's all-time leading scorer in 588 games on March 18, 2014.
Koivu won this franchise record on February 28, 2016, surpassing Nick Schultz's 743 games with the Minnesota Wild.
The Wild signed Koivu to a two-year, $11 million contract extension worth $5.5 million a year on September 18, 2017.
After suffering a tear in his Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his right knee, Koivu was out for the remainder of the 2018-19 season. The incident occurred the night before during a game against the Buffalo Sabres. In 48 games, he had eight goals and 29 points to start his season.
On March 13, 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's number, becoming the first franchise to be honoured in history.
Koivu completed his 15-year career with the Wild on October 10th and signed as a free agent with the Columbus Blue Jackets for one-year, $1.5 million. Koivu announced his retirement from the NHL on February 9, 2021, after only scoring a goal and an assist for two points in seven games.
