Sergachev was drafted sixth overall in the CHL Import Draft, and the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League selected him sixth overall. Sergachev was highly regarded by scouts and was considered one of the best defensemen in the draft going into 2016. He was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens ninth overall, the second defenseman drafted behind Vancouver's Olli Juolevich. The Canadiens revealed on July 1 that Sergachev had been signed to a three-year entry-level deal.

Sergachev helped the Windsor Spitfires win their third Memorial Cup title in franchise history on May 28. Sergachev was also selected as an All-Star of the Memorial Cup tournament.

Sergachev made the opening night roster for the 2016-17 season after attending his first Canadiens' training camp. In a 4–1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on October 13, he made his NHL debut with Montreal. He appeared in four games with the Canadiens before returning to his junior team, the Windsor Spitfires, on October 31, 2016.

The Canadiens traded Sergachev (along with a conditional second-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft) to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Jonathan Drouin and a conditional sixth-round draft pick in the same draft on June 15, 2017.

Since Michael Bunting of Toronto was pushed off the ice by a linesman, NHL fans are split on the team

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 21, 2022
Pierre-Edouard Bellemare drilled Mitch Marner into the boards with the Leafs leading 1-0 in the dying seconds of the first game of the season. Marner's allies responded to his defense, including Bunting, who took a piece of Anthony Cirelli and Mikhail Sergachev. Dan Kelly, a linesman, rushed to rescue him and usher him into the tunnels of Toronto. Kelly was very successful in getting Bunting off the ice, with him almost causing the player to fall nearly every time.
