Michael John Montgomery (born February 27, 1947) is a retired American basketball coach.
He is best known for his 18-year service at Stanford (1986–2004), where he steered the Stanford program to 12 NCAA Tournaments, including a Final Four appearance in 1998.
Montgomery served as head coach at the Montana (1978-1996).
He coached the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA) for two seasons (2004-2006), before completing his career at the University of California (2008–2014).
Montgomery announced his retirement from coaching in 2013-2014.
In 1991, he led Stanford to the NIT championship.
Early years
Montgomery was born and raised in Long Beach, California, and attended Long Beach State. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education from Long Beach State and later a master's degree in physical education from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Montgomery is an alumni of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, which he joined while attending Long Beach State.
College coaching career
Montgomery held a 677-317 (.681) overall record in over 30 years at Berkeley (1986-1984) and Montana (1978–1986). In his 32 years as a head coach at Berkeley, Stanford, and Montana, he has won 31 seasons. From 1995 to 2004, Montgomery's Stanford teams have advanced to the NCAA tournament ten times in a row. Stanford was one of the first Final Four appearances in 56 years under Montgomery in 1998. In 2002, he was named an assistant under George Karl for the US national team in the 2002 FIBA World Championship, his third appearance along the USA Basketball sidelines.
He served as an assistant for the Griz in Missoula for two seasons before being named head coach by Jim Brandenburg, who succeeded hall of famer Jud Heathcote in 1976. Brandenburg was fired after two seasons with Wyoming in 1978, and Montgomery was promoted. Micheal Richardson and Larry Krystkowiak, both from Montana, coached future NBA players Micheal Ray Richardson and Larry Krystkowiak. Montgomery had been an assistant at three different colleges before going to Montana, and had previously been an assistant at three different universities.
Montgomery was named the Year's Naismith and Basketball Times Coach of the Year in 2000. He has been named Pac-10 Coach of the Year four times. He was given the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Lifetime Achievement Award following his time at Stanford.
NBA coaching career
On May 21, 2004, Montgomery left Stanford to become the head coach of the Golden State Warriors. During two seasons, he coached the Warriors, who had compiled similar 34-48 records. On August 29, 2006, Montgomery was fired as Warriors coach.
