Richard Slayman, 62, the first patient to receive an organ transplant from a genetically altered pig, has performed so well that he has been discharged from the hospital. The new kidney is expected to perform all of its essential functions, including urine production, removing waste products from the blood, and balancing the body's fluids, according to doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Lawrence Faucette, 58, underwent transplant surgery this week after being deemed ineligible for a human heart transplant due to peripheral vascular disease, which decreases blood flow. The procedure, also known as a xenotransplantation, has only been performed once before on an ex-convict who died two months later. Both pioneering procedures were carried out at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Mr Faucette, a married father of two and 20-year Navy veteran, is breathing on his own, and his heart is operating without any support devices. He was going to die without the procedure. Mr Faucette said a few days before surgery, "I only true hope left is to go with the pig heart, the xenotransplant."
