Early career
Chapman was born in Queensland, Australia, and attended the Anglican Church Grammar School. He immigrated to the United Kingdom, where he became a member of the Downliners Sect and then joined the group Tangerine Peel in 1968. They began an album in 1969 and had many near-hit singles between 1967 and 1970. Nicky Chinn appeared in 1970 while working as a waiter at Tramp's London nightclub. The pair formed a song-writing partnership and began collaborating with producer Mickie Most on his RAK Records label, which soon expanded to a roster of musicians including Suzi Quatro, Smokie, and Mud.
