Mikael Jansson (born July 15, 1958) is a Swedish fashion photographer and director.
Jansson is a regular contributor to American and French Vogue, Interview Magazine, as well as filming campaigns for luxury brands, including Estée Lauder, Coach, Calvin Klein, and Louis Vuitton. When Jansson launched a nude portfolio in the Netherlands in 1998, he attracted international notice, eventually being selected by industry insiders the leading avant-garde journal.
In a nod to Andy Warhol, the section spanned 82 pages and featured fashion credits to nude images. Jansson now divides his time between London and New York.
Early life
Jansson was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He began photographing in the woods of Sköndal (Stockholm), and like many other visual artists, Mikael was fascinated with birds. He knew all the different species from Fang i Färg, a lauded book published by the swedish ornithologist Sigfrid Durango.
In the 1970s and early 1980s, Jansson photographed famous bands touring Stockholm behind the stage and in VIP settings, including Blondie, Roxy Music, Iggy, Bowie, and the Clash, as well as musicians Chet Baker and Miles Davis.
He then began working as an assistant with Swedish photographer Carl-Johan Rönn, where he gained experience in the work of Stieglitz, Brassa, Cartier-Bresson, Kerstész, and Lartigue. Richard Avedon was sent by five years ago to help him with In the American West during the time Avedon was in New York.
Career
In 1987, Jansson returned to Stockholm to start his own studio and darkroom, which today remains in tact.
Jansson had moved to Paris and started his career as an international fashion photographer for magazines including Glamour, British Vogue, Italian Vogue, Numero, Arena Hommes Plus, and Stockholm New, a magazine that Jansson helped pioneer in the early 90s. It was during those years that Jansson began a long-term collaboration with stylist Karl Templer, who, in a 2008 interview for French GQ, said that his talent was "limitless."
Both analog film photography and digital photography were represented in Jansson's body of work. Jansson founded himself with an international brand like Chanel, Brioni, Zara, Swarovski, Calvin Klein, Lancôme, Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Estée Lauder.
He has been commissioned for publications including Vogue, Interview Magazine, Vogue Paris, W Magazine, Vogue Hommes International, Love, Pop, Another Magazine, and Vogue News. These assignments feature high-profile celebrities, including Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman, Jodie Foster, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Benjamin Stone, Sofia Coppola, Christian Bale, and Marc Jacobs.
Claes Britton wrote that the women he portrays are paradoxically strong and vulnerable, such as Veruschka, Tatjana Patitz, Isabella Rossellini, Carolyn Murphy, Gisele Bündchen Raquelmann, Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, and Bella & Gigi Hadid.
Mikael Jansson is internationally recognised by Annette Wenzel at M.A.P ltd.
