When the Duchess of Sussex claimed that she spends her time Googling small and up-and-coming designers to put them in the global spotlight and boost sales, she raised eyebrows amongst royal watchers. While she undoubtedly can be credited with putting the British brand Strathberry on the map, she often chose to wear high-end - and expensive - designer labels such as Givenchy, Dior and Oscar de la Renta on official engagements. And, certainly, she is not the only member of the Royal Family to propel British brands to success: many labels attribute their sales boosts to the royal seal of approval.

www.dailymail.co.uk,

They are the new Fab Four - George and Amal, Brad and Ines. The two grandmaster Hollywood heartthrobs and their glamorous partners clearly enjoyed each other's company in Venice, walking the red carpet, at times all four arm-in-arm, on Sunday. They had actually spent a long weekend as a 'pack' at the Hotel Cipriani in the run-up to the premiere of Brad and George's film, Wolfs, at the Venice Film Festival. The critics may have found the buddy-caper film a little smug, even tiresome; but the reignited bromance between Brad and George is the real thing. And one of the key reasons why it works again is the beautiful woman at Brad Pitt's side.

As Joe Biden disembarked Air Force One in the early hours of Tuesday morning in California last week, he was visibly shaking. It was approaching 5.30am East Coast time and the president had been awake almost 24 hours. Walking slowly down the plane's stairs, he struggled to step up into the SUV waiting to take him to the 8,000-acre Santa Barbara ranch where he and his family have been enjoying a lengthy vacation. His Secret Service agents surrounded him, shielding him from the watching cameras, as one gave him a helpful boost into the car.

CAROLINE GRAHAM: Thousands of wildly enthusiastic Democrats cheered their political idols Barack and Michelle Obama and Bill and Hillary Clinton in what one teary-eyed delegate called 'the ultimate political love-fest'. This pre-election orgy - otherwise known as the Democratic National Convention - culminated with the official crowning of Kamala Harris as candidate to take on Donald Trump in November's US presidential election. Yet on the streets of Chicago, America's third largest city, the mood was very different.
ALEXANDRA SHULMAN'S NOTEBOOK: Lure of the cruel sea is so strong for the wealthy
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 24, 2024
ALEXANDRA SHULMAN: The tragedy of the death of tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his daughter and others, on the ill-fated Bayesian is a reminder that no matter how wealthy and successful we are, the sea is a cruel mistress and in hock to no man or woman. Clearly, the yacht was a source of great pride and joy - and a symbol of Lynch's business success. Owning a boat is frequently the favoured marker of the achievements of a self-made tycoon. I don't for a moment suggest that Lynch was an extravagant show-off - indeed those who knew him claim quite the reverse was true. But I've long thought it curious that men (and women) who are used to complete control in their life often buy a boat as their reward of choice.
