Happy birthday to the woman who has guided me through life. Your love, your support—all of your thoughtful advice—means more to me than you'll ever know. You’ve always been my backstop—a calm and nonjudgmental witness to my life and a vital source of my sanity. Thank you for teaching me how to trust my own judgement and for always giving me those much-needed reality checks. I’ve dedicated a chapter to sharing your wonderful parenting advice in The Light We Carry, and I can’t wait for everybody to take in all of your words of wisdom. I love you so much, mom! 💕🫶🏾 Posted by @michelleobama on Jul 29, 2022 01:00PM

I’m excited to share the first two episodes of The Sum of Us, a new podcast from HigherGroundMedia that I love. In this podcast, HeatherCMcGhee travels the country to find stories of ordinary people who are overcoming divisions and building better communities. From Florida all the way to California, Heather shares the connections that are rebuilding America. This season, you'll meet environmentalists who rallied Black and white neighborhoods to protect their water source, refugee farmers in Maine who are changing the industry, and so much more. These days, when it can feel like we’re more divided than ever, these kinds of stories remind us how much we can learn from people who may seem different from us. Because at the end of the day, it’s clear that we’re a lot more similar than we may think—and that we all want to live in a country where our families and children can thrive. I hope this series nourishes and inspires you. You can subscribe and listen to the podcast on Spotify. #TheSumOfUsPod Posted by @michelleobama on Jul 27, 2022 08:15PM

Like so many of you, I’ve spent a lot of time these past few years thinking about how to keep myself centered in a world filled with so much uncertainty. That process of reflection actually led me to start writing again—and today, I could not be more thrilled to tell you about my new book, The Light We Carry, which comes out on November 15. This book is a collection of stories and practices that have helped me sort through all the challenges and questions that keep us up at night: How do I know I’m good enough? How do I bring my whole self to the table? How can I overcome my fears? I never thought I would be the author of one book, let alone two. But I’ve found that writing this has been a way for me to gather my thoughts and find more clarity during this time. So, I hope this book means as much to you as it does to me. Today, on #MalalaDay, we asked young women from the GirlsOpportunityAlliance to tell us how Malala inspires them. You can read what they shared below—and I hope everyone will follow Malala’s extraordinary example and keep fighting for girls everywhere to get the education they deserve. “In my community, many girls don’t finish school. My parents encouraged my education, but there were times when I felt my own dreams slipping away. Malala gave me an example of strength and determination to take inspiration from. I’m proud to say I graduated.” -Clare (Kampala, Uganda) “Whenever I’m needing confidence, I look at role models like Malala. She taught me about the importance of education for girls all over the world and how we all have to stand up for each other. I’m committed to doing that.” -Allena (Hawai’i, USA) “Malala is a great woman! She fought for education and for this reason I want to be like her. I admire her, and my class section is even named after her at my school." Claudia (Sololá, Guatemala) “Malala proved that one girl’s voice can change the world. Since she did it, it makes me believe that I can too.” -Dreshta (New York, USA) Posted by @michelleobama on Jul 12, 2022 01:45PM

I'm thrilled that some of the students from our GirlsOpportunityAlliance had the chance to attend the WNBA All-Star game in my hometown! I couldn’t be prouder to see our reigning champs ChicagoSky represented on the team—with Coach Wade leading the way. Through our work at the ObamaFoundation, Barack and I are making sure that young people around Chicago have access to exciting opportunities like this. We hope that seeing these incredible players in action inspires these young women to continue to dream big—on and off the court! 🏀 Posted by @michelleobama on Jul 11, 2022 03:35PM
