Michel Stoffel Life

Michel Stoffel (1903-1963) was a Luxembourg artist and writer.

He also worked in the insurance industry for a short time.

He is considered one of Luxembourg's most influential painters along with Joseph Kutter.

Early life and education

Stoffel was born in Bissen, central Luxembourg, on March 24. His family moved to Liège in 1913, where he attended primary and secondary school, but he continued his education in Luxembourg at the Lycée de Garçons in Limpertsberg. He took a correspondence course at Ecole Universelle Dessin in Paris in 1919 and, after being in the insurance industry for a few years, he completed his studies at the Weimar Academy of Fine Art in 1933.

Artistic career

When working in insurance, he also started to paint, winning the Prix Grand-Duc Adolphe in 1936 and becoming president of the Cercle artistique de Luxembourg in 1939. He appeared in the Salon d'Automne des Artistes in Nancy (1945), as well as an exhibition of his own works at the Galerie Bradtké in Luxembourg (1946). He was a participant of the Salon d'Art moderne et contemporain in Liège in 1948.

He first began painting in abstract art in 1950, leading him to become one of the founding members and spokesman for the Iconomaques, a group of Luxembourg artists dedicated to abstract art. He received an honorable mention at the fourth So Paulo Art Biennial in 1956. In 1962, he created two mosaics for Nouvel Athénée in Luxembourg and became a member of the Grand Ducal Institute's arts and literature section.

Michel Stoffel died in Luxembourg City on March 29, 1963, five days before his 60th birthday. In 2003, Michel Stoffel 1903-1903-1933, the centennial of his birth, and the National Museum of History and Art in Luxembourg held an exhibition of his work: Rétrospective Michel Stoffel 1903-1993-1933.
