On The Road: Falkirk ascent is driven by hopes and fears... but the glass of buoyant Bairns is three-quarters full

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 6, 2024
Football is a game of passion, history, hope, despair and fleeting triumph. Its scope and depth would test the powers of a poet. But sometimes, just sometimes, it is best told in numbers. As the Bairns toddle towards their 150th anniversary in 2026, the numbers tell a tale of survival, a story of endurance in the face of what seemed overwhelming odds, and serve as a reminder of the hard miles travelled, the most desperate of them very recently. The chroniclers of this tale are a young executive and fans, some of whom have spent 50 years supporting the club. They can be found in the pristine Falkirk Stadium which again has a story that concerns figures. There are three occupied sides to the arena. The fourth is not yet filled. Falkirk were told they had to have a 10,000-seater to enter the top division. This rule has faded into history, meaning the fourth side did not have to be built.

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Kate was unable to attend the Irish Guards' St Patrick's Day parade... But put £2,000 behind the bar for them instead

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 20, 2024
HARDCASTLE (EPHRAIM): Recovering Kate, who was unable to attend a Guinness toast on St Patrick's Day, ensured her favorite troops were well stocked at her expense on St Patrick's Day. She poured £2,000 behind the regimental bar at Aldershot for a party after the traditional parade, to their delight. According to my bacus, the thirsty troopers were treated to at least 700 pints of the black stuff at no cost. And did she specify that regimental mascot Seamus, the Irish wolfhound, should be treated to a jumbo bone?

What a pair of wimps Simon Case and Richard Moore are for resigning from the Garrick Club - The Russians and Chinese must be laughing themselves silly, writes an anonymous club member

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 20, 2024
MEMBER: SIM CASE & Sir Richard Moore, our most senior civil servant, and MI6's Chief Richard Moore, who resigned in reaction to the unveiling of the Garrick Club's membership list, is bizarre and troubling. These two guys are supposed to be both governing the country and shielding it from hostile foreign powers. But, at the first sign of incoming criticism from a Left-wing newspaper, the Guardian, who chastised them for being banned from attending a club that excludes women supporters, they resigned and apologised sincerely for the appalling offence of enjoying the occasional lunch or drink in a single-sex private club's convivial atmosphere.

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: A member of the Royal Family's honour could soon be honoured

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 5, 2024
HARDCASTLE: One of the pleasures of being included in the Honours Lists - having a gong bestowed by a Royal Family member - could be a rare occurrence. With the King and the Princess of Wales out of action, a labour shortage has resulted in Lord Lieutenants' drafting to divide the burden. Lord Lieutenant Andrew Tryckish of Berkshire made his first appearance dispensing awards on Sunday. The MBE's recess, who are looking forward to either William or Anne, should have been deflated.
