Early years
Michael Charles Chilufya Sata was born in 1937 and grew up in Mpika, Northern Province. During colonial rule, he served as a police officer, railway man, and labour activist. He spent time in London on the railway sweeping the platforms. He was, among other things, a porter at Victoria's railway station. Sata's involvement in the politics of Northern Rhodesia began in 1963. He rose from the humble ranks-and-file of the ruling United National Independence Party (UNIP) to Lusaka's governorship in 1985 after independence. With a hands on approach, he made his name as Governor George Washington. He sanitized the streets, patched roads, and built bridges in the city. He then became a member of parliament for Lusaka's Kabwata constituency. Although Kaunda's authoritarian style disillusioned him, he left UNIP to join the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) during the 1991 campaign for multi-party democracy (MMD).
Personal life
Margaret Mandala was Sata's first marriage. During his reign, he married Christine Kaseba, who became Zambia's First Lady after his demise. According to reports, Michael Sata had at least ten children between his two marriages.
Christine Kaseba, Sata's widow, denied allegations by another woman that she and Michael Sata were married to him as well as herself.
Michael Sata earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Atlantic International University.
Early politics
Sata became one of Zambia's most recognisable faces after Frederick Chiluba defeated Kaunda in 1991. He served as minister for local government, strike, and, for a brief period, health care, and, under MMD, he said that his "reforms brought sanity to the health system."
He was appointed minister without a portfolio in 1995, the party's national organizing secretary, whose political style was described as "increasingly abrasive."
