Michael Fabiano Life

Michael Fabiano (born 8 May 1984) is an American operatic tenor.

Born in Montclair, New Jersey, he has appeared in top opera houses around the world, including the San Francisco Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real, and The Royal Opera among others.

Fabiano is both the 2014 Richard Tucker Award winner and the 2014 Beverly Sills Artist Award winner, making him the first artist to win both awards in the same year.

Early years

Fabiano was a champion high school debater for Benilde-St. Margaret's high school in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Fabiano was also a baseball umpire from the ages of 14 to 24. Fabiano decided to study vocal performance at The University of Michigan after briefly considering a career in finance. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance in 2005. During his stay in Don Giovanni, he worked under tenor George Shirley and appeared in several roles with the University Opera Theatre, including Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi and Don Ottavio. He also worked with soprano Julia Faulkner, with whom he still studies today. He began his studies at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia in the summer after graduation, and in the fall of that year, he studied under Bill Schuman. Laurent Philippe, Gioacchino Li Vigni, and Neil Shicoff are among his colleagues and mentors who work with him.

Personal life

Fabiano is openly gay. On October 28, 2018, Bryan McCalister, a New York marketing and branding specialist, married Metropolitan Opera House's Bryan McCalister. They have since divorced. On his days off, he enjoys piloting small planes.

Professional career

Fabiano made his stage debut in 2007 at the Klagenfurt Stadttheater as Alfredo in La traviata. He appeared in Rinuccio's debut and Mavra's title role in Stravinsky's Mavra in the same year. Don Antonio in Dom Sébastien with the Opera Orchestra of New York and conductor Eve Queler made her debut at Carnegie Hall in 2006. Fabiano made his La Scala debut as Rinuccio in a production directed by Riccardo Chailly in 2008. Rodolfo in La bohème, with the Minnesota Orchestra as Alfredo, was followed by Opera New Jersey as Alfredo. In Naples, Fabiano appeared as both Pinkerton and Alfredo in Madama Butterfly and Alfredo in La traviata. Il Duca in Rigoletto performed in Rigoletto as his role and opera house debut at the English National Opera. Raffaele in Stiffelio, January 2010, made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Raffaele. In addition, Fabiano has appeared Rodolfo in La bohème with the Kansas City Lyric Opera, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and the tenor soloist of Rossini's Stabat Mater in Spoleto.

He made several international debuts during the 2010-11 season, most notably as the Duke in Rigoletto at the Dresden National Opera in Frankfurt, Germany, and as Rodolfo in La bohème at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Opéra de Limoges. In addition, Fabiano appeared with the Columbus Symphony in his first Verdi Requiem. Edgardo and the Paris Opéra as Cassio in Verdi's Otello continued the season with debuts with the ABAO firm in Bilbao as Edgardo and the Paris Opéra.

During the 2011/12 season, actor Gennaro in Lucrezia Borgia opposite soprano Renée Fleming appeared onstage for the first time. In addition to the season's premieres, the Doctor in Shostakovich's newly discovered "Orango" in Oper Köln with Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, and the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto were included in the performances. In concert with the Oslo Philharmonic, Rodolfo in La bohème, "An die ferne geliebte" and "Missa Solemnis," as well as pianist Laurent Philippe and pianist John Churchwell, also appeared in La Bohème as Rodolfo in La bohème. During The Santa Fe Opera's summer 2013 festival season, he appeared as Alfredo in La traviata.

The following seasons, 2013-2014, featured Edgardo in La Bohème, his debut at the Canadian Opera Company as Pablo di Lammermoor, a premiere performance of Verdi's rarely performed Il corsaro with the Metropolitan Opera, pianist Danielle Orlando's debut as Alfred in Verdi's rarely performed Il corsaro with the Dutch Opera, as well as a new production of La traviata with the Glyndebourne Festival. In 2014, Fabiano received both the Beverly Sills Artist Award, which was presented by the Metropolitan Opera, and the Richard Tucker Award.

He sang Rodolfo in a new production of La bohème at the San Francisco Opera in 2014, a role he also appeared in at the Metropolitan Opera. He appeared at a concert at Avery Fisher Hall, where he was also given the Richard Tucker Award. In David McVicar's production of Faust, Fabiano made his company debut with Opera Australia in February 2015. On seven hours' notice, he replaced an elderly colleague in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera and opened the Glyndebourne Festival 2015, in Donizetti's Poliuto, in the first professional production of this opera in the United Kingdom. Fabiano has been named recipient of Australia's Best Male Performance in an Opera" category for his portrayal of the title role in Gounod's Faust with Opera Australia.

Fabiano debuted two roles at the San Francisco Opera in rave reviews, Rodolfo in Luisa Miller, and Don Carlo's title role. Rodolfo in La bohème at Opernhaus Zürich, Lensky, and the Duke of Rigoletto with the Paris Opera were also performing Rodolfo and La bohème.

The 2016/2017 season marked Faust's debut with the Houston Grand Opera in the title role as well as his debut with the Royal Danish Opera in the Verdi Requiem. In addition, Fabiano appeared in La Bohème and Alfredo in La traviata, returned to the San Francisco Symphony for a "all-Italian" program and the Washington Concert Opera as John the Baptist in Hérodiade. He also did a recital tour in North America, taking him to seven cities, and he made his London recital debut at Wigmore Hall in 2017.

Fabiano appeared in La bohème at both the Royal Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in the 2017/2018 season. Des Grieux in Massenet's Manon appears at both the San Francisco Opera and at ABAO-OLBE, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor at both the Metropolitan Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, as well as a recital for Oper Frankfurt. In Rigoletto, Fabiano will make his debut at the Los Angeles Opera as the Duke.
