Michael Basman Life

Michael John Basman (born 16 March 1946 in St Pancras, London) is an English chess player, chess writer, and International Master.

In 1980, he was given the International Master Award.

He has written several books in his own games, including the St. George Defence (with which English Grandmaster Tony Miles once famously defeated then World Champion Anatoly Karpov), the Grob (for Black and White), and then a quick c4.

Possibly his greatest tournament triumph came when tying for first place in the British Chess Championship tournament of 1973, but he had to miss the play-off match against William Hartston.

In 1975, England defeated France in Luton over ten boards.

Basman played Board One, ahead of upcoming super grandmasters Nunn and Speelman. He founded the UK Chess Challenge, a tournament for juniors of all grades and ages, which has progressed to four stages.

"Michael Basman is in many ways the most important person in British chess," Grandmaster Ray Keene wrote about Basman's promotion of youth chess. "Basman's father was an Armenian immigrant who changed the family name from Basmadjian."

Cleo Laine, a young Michael's babysitter, was known by his family.
