May Swenson Life

May "May" Swenson (May 28, 1913-December 4, 1989) was an American poet and playwright.

Margaret and Dan Arthur Swenson's first child was regarded as one of the twentieth century's most influential and original poets. English was a second language in this family.

Although her conservative family struggled to accept that she was a lesbian, her Christian family remained close throughout her life.

The bulk of her later poetry performances were devoted to children (e.g., the narrator). 1970 (Iconographs) Collection Iconographographs

She also translated contemporary Swedish poets, as well as Nobel laureate Tomas Tranströmer's selected poems.

Personal life

Swenson graduated from Utah State University in Logan, Utah, with a bachelor's degree in 1934. At Bryn Mawr College, the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, the University of California, Riverside, Purdue University, and Utah State University, she taught poetry as poet-in-residence. She worked as a manuscript examiner at New Directions Publishing from 1959 to 1966. Swenson left New Directions Press in 1966 in an attempt to shift entirely to her own writing. She served as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets from 1980 to 1989. She is buried in the Logan City Cemetery, and her grave is marked by a granite bench on which is etched some of her poetry. She lived in Sea Cliff, New York, for the first twenty years of her life.

Swenson worked as an editor and ghostwriter for a man named "Plat," who later became her "boyfriend." "I think I should like to have a son by Plat," she wrote in her diary, "but I would not want to be married to any man, but only myself."

In Antaeus, The Atlantic Monthly, Carleton Miscellany, The Country, The Nation, The New Yorker, Saturday Review, Parnassus, and Poetry. Question was also included in Stephenie Meyer's book The Host.
