Irene Mary Wetton (26 July 1936 – 10 November 1998), better known by her stage name Mary Millar, was a British actress and singer best known for her appearance in the highly praised BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances between 1991 and 1995.
Early life
Irene Mary Wetton was born in Doncaster, England, on July 26, 1936, to Horace and Irene (née Mellor) Wetton, both music hall singers. She intended to become a good hand but then decided to go back to school to pursue a career in acting. She and her parents, who had an act called Sweethearts in Harmony, toured the country.

Career
In Those Were the Days, Millar made her first television appearance in 1953, aged 17. She appeared on The Dick Emery Show and The Stanley Baxter Exhibition. Millar received acclaim for her role in Keeping Up Appearances as Rose, assassinating Shirley Stelfox in Series 2 in 1991, when Stelfox had prior commitments to Making Out. Millar continued with the program until its conclusion in 1995.
In 1960, Millar traveled to Camelot to understudy Julie Andrews. In 1962, she became Cloris in Lock Up Your Daughters, which began her West End career. Ann Veronica, a film based on H. G. Wells' book, was based in 1969. She was the title role in the musical Ann Veronica. Millar created Madame Giry in Andrew Lloyd Webber's opera The Phantom of the Opera in 1986.
